Scarlet could feel her skin absorbing the warm rays from Celestia's morning sun. The whistling wind that danced through the Canterlot streets tugged on her dress and fought with its chill against the power of the new risen start. Fresh dew still clung to the sweet smelling grass from Luna's night. The sizzle of cooking food could be heard over the quiet mumbling and clattering of hooves on smooth stone. The air was laced with traces of fine perfume mixed with labourers sweat and the tang of foreign fruits. Scarlet watched the array of alfresco cafe's as they welcomed their first customers of the day and sat them down in front of a warm vegetable broth.
Towards the end of that street, the path widened until it gave way to a large market place. It was like a market that any small town would have, although, since it was Canterlot, the stalls favoured selling foreign delights and rich perfumes instead of old timber and apples. It was the perfect place for Scarlet to restock her monthly chemical supplies. Independent traders always offered better prices over brand name cosmetics. Scarlet had reasoned that was because they lacked quality, but when she used both lines in her products, the result was always the same. She was tempted to impulse buy some divine eyeliner but remembering her coin purse only held bits for business, she moved past the overzealous sales ponies to locate her favourite store. Without failure the young mare's stall appeared every month, offering prices half of what Scarlet had ever seen before.
"Greetings." She addressed the stall attendant.
"Ah, Scarlet." A warm smile greeted her. "Here for your monthly package."
"Indeed I am."
"That will be 500 bits."
"500 bits... " Scarlet mumbled to herself.
"Wasn't it only 400 last time?"
"Well yes but that was then and this is now."
"I only brought 450 bits, can you cut me a deal?"
"500 or I'll sell it to the next mare or stallion that comes this way. Last package too. I finally got some of that high
quality essence you were after. What a shame you can't afford it.
"
"500 bits..."
she groaned.
