Dust puffs from beneath the train as it rolls into the Appleoosa station. With a puff of steam it comes to a halt and the doors slide open. Several ponies get off the train, including a small family, some official looking ponies in suits, a few tourists, and one extravagantly dressed mare, sporting huge lacy hat. As the dust settles a green unicorn hops out of the middle car and stretches. With a yawn he slowly looks around at the weathered wooden buildings, each one showing a long history of being beaten by sandy winds.
Directly beside the platform is an apple cart and a worker from the nearby orchard selling apples. Knotty slept through most of the trip, leaving him grogy and hungry. He places a bit on the counter and it is replaced by three big, red apples. One apple floats back into his well worn saddle bags and another is devoured before he has even left the cart. Afraid knot smiles and nods to the merchant, who tips his hat with a quick "thanks" before the next customer trots up. Afraid knot nibbles his apple as he slowly walks through town, his ever present limp causing his flank to slightly bob. checking out the few shops that dot the dusty road. He finishes his apple as he reads a sign in a tailors shop window that details prices for repairs and alterations. Knotty briefly considers having his old tattered saddle bags repaired, but decides against it. Maybe another time.
Finally he comes to the swinging doors of the salt block saloon. He pushes the creaky doors open as he walks into the main room of the saloon. In the back corner a table is surrounded by ponies wearing cowboy hats and bandanas. They seem enveloped in a game of poker, that seems a little less than friendly. Against a wall sits an old piano covered in marks from thrown bottles and countless fights. A gruff, bearded pegasus plays a lively tune that threatens to overpower some of the conversations in the room. This leads to some shouting, making the room incredibly loud. Afraid knot spies a rickety old shelf with nothing on it and an assortment of bottles on the floor beside it. With a smile and an idea he slides up to the bar and orders a hay and oat smoothie, which is whipped up in an instant. He takes a long drink before asking the bar tender if he woukd like the shelf fixed. The large pony laughs heartily and explains that it cant be fixed, he needs a new one but he cant afford it untill the spring. knotty takes another look at the shelf. "Best carpenter in the west says its busted, if you can fix it your drinks are on me."
With a chuckle knotty stretches to look over the bar. he spies a coiled up lasso under a shelf with a number of miscellaneous items. His horn glows and the rope shifts slightly. The bartender jumps a little and watches as a half foot piece of heavy rope is effortlessly detached and begins to unravel. Knotty's eye twitches, causing his scar to momentarily contort as he concentrates on his spell. The various filaments dance and braid together into a thin twine almost seven feet long. The weaved braid is almost as strong as the full sized rope it came from and is quite a bit more flexible. The bartender watches, slack jawed as the two ends of the twine grab the broken structure of the shelf and pull it into shape. Knotty walks behind the bar and pushes with both front hooves to get it into just the right position as the twine spins around the splintered wood, pulling itself so tight it begins to dig into the lumber. The ends slip out of the original knots and meet each other in an intensely tight knot. His horn stops glowing and the string settles just a little. Knotty trots back to the bar, limping around the corner and sits down to a long drink as the bartender tests the shelf. All his weight cant bring it down. "Wow, im a pony of my word son, your bits are no good here tonight." Knotty thabks him kindly and takes a look around.
Afraid knot asks if anypony around here could help him navigate the craggy canyons and windswept deserts outside of town. The bartender grunts and points to a board near the door while he pours a drink for the piano player. His drink floating beside him, knotty heads to the board and reads some of the posters. There are two wanted posters, and a handfull of notices from ponies from the area who are looking for work, showing travelers the sights for a fee. 'I dont want to see the sights, i need to get well off the beaten path.' He thinks to himself as he sits at a table, gently placing his drink down. A folded letter floats from his bag and smooths out on the table. On it are two rough drawings of flowers with the names 'dustshade' and 'raven's breath' underneath. He looses himself in the pictures as he sips his drink, completly oblivious to the room around him as the piano starts to play again.
