Night froze when she heard Pixel's challenge. A small smile began to curve her lips even before the pegasus apologised, at which point she had to cover her mouth to hold back the giggles. Laughing without explanation was weird, and she didn't want to seem weird. Even so, the tiniest of laughs slipped out as she mused over her new friend's words.
The first time Night had visited to the park, she had just been in a fight with Star. She had sat down on a bench near the river with an astronomy book to try and calm herself. When she had finished reading she became bored and kicked a pebble into the water. Through pure luck it hit the water at an angle and Night, unintentionally, skimmed a stone for the first time.
She had spent the rest of her visit practising with random pebbles to see how many times she could make the stones skip along the water. She got to around ten skips before realising she had to head home. Every time she went to the park since, she had practised her new random talent, with her best score being twenty skips. She'd never gotten that high since, but she'd come close many times.
From atop the bridge, Night doubted she could get anywhere above ten, but she was fairly confident she could beat Pixel's three skips. Luckily, skimming stones was one of the very few things she did without magic. The black unicorn glanced around and took a small pebble from a lower part of the bridge. As she picked it up, Pixel's explanation for how hooves worked suddenly made a lot more sense. It really was just instinctual.
Night trotted back to the top of the bridge and reared onto her hind hooves. She rested one foreleg across the rail, the other still holding the stone. The unicorn stuck her tongue out in concentration before tossing the stone at the water. The pebble struck the river at an angle, skipping seven times before sinking to the bottom. The black mare turned back to Pixel and smirked. "How's that for skimming stones?"
(OOC: Random fact; the world record for the number of skips is 88. )
