It was a beautiful day in Ponyville. The birds were chirping, the sun was shining, and Slide Fortissimo was in a panic state. "Goodness! I'm going to be late!" Flying as fast as he could towards the park, he could already see plenty of musicians and other ponies who were setting up the stage for the Ponyville Jazz Ensemble, the group Slide conducts. Formed when he moved to Ponyville, he had assembled the best jazz ensemble in Equestria. Starting it's 5th season, Slide was excited to hear new musicians as well as those who returned to play their musical instrument successfully. Arriving at the stage, Slide gasped. The stage was complete, chairs and stands were being setup, and the musicians were waiting with their instrument cases. Slide stepped onto his podium and made an announcement. "Attention everyone! Welcome to the Ponyville Jazz Ensemble auditions. If you have a musical instrument, please begin to warm up. For those who are setting up the stands and chairs, please continue and take all the time you need to finish up. Thank you everyone and good luck!" Slide flew towards the musicians. Observing the group, there were plenty of trumpet players, trombonists, saxophonists, piano, bass, guitar, and drum set players. "Okay, let's get started. I would like to hear the trombonists first, then trumpets, saxophones, followed by piano, bass, guitar, and the drum set to conclude. Good luck!"
3 hours later.
The auditions were finished and Slide soon had 22 ponies who played a musical instrument and 15 ponies to handle getting the stage ready, music stands ready, and setting up chairs as well as helping Slide organize his music. 4 trumpet players, 3 tenor trombonists, 1 bass trombonist, 2 tenor saxophonists, 3 alto saxophonists, 1 baritone saxophonist, 2 piano players, 2 upright bass players, 2 guitar players, and 2 drum set players with 1 on the drum set, the other on percussion.
Slide impressively stepped onto the podium, an audience had formed behind him. "Alright everypony, take a look over at your first jazz tune you will be playing. It's called "Blue Train" and it's an excellent tune to play."
A few minutes went by. The musicians were still looking over the music. "Alright then. I hope you're ready, because this is one of my favorites. Now then, one, two, a one, two, three, four!" The jazz tune began soon afterward. As the tune progressed, Slide felt the music and began to hum along while he conducted. Soon, the alto saxophone solo began. "Excellent!" Slide shouted. The tune was being performed like no other. Slide was so happy, he almost fell off the podium! A trombone solo, a saxophone ensemble, and a trumpet solo soon followed, as well as a baritone saxophone solo, and a piano solo was played flawlessly. The last part of the piece was played and was soon concluded. Slide was too excited to say anything. "Wow! Now that is what I call playing well. Fantastic! Now, is there anypony here who has any questions?" Slide asked. "Even though I am a professional trombonist, I am proud to be the conductor of a very excellent group of jazz musicians in this jazz ensemble."
