Overall Persona: Notepad is a sensible young colt who is able to converse with animals and is already adept at inventing things, most likely due to the fact that he is always by Gearbox's side. He longs to be a gentlecolt like Gearbox, but as he is a foal, he sometimes loses his temper, only to feel ashamed as Gearbox tells him to calm down and lectures him on how a real gentlecolt would act. Similar to most foals his age, he can let out a cheeky comment when he needs to. Like many young colts, he loves to eat, and has a legendary appetite.
Although his parents are alive and well in Canterlot Notepad lives with Gearbox, this was arranged after Gearbox helped Notepad's parents solve a particularly puzzling mystery. Notepad's parents saw how much he looked up to Gearbox and they also saw that Gearbox was a true Gentlecolt and an excellent role-model for their son.
