-General Stuff-
Name: Silver Glow
Nickname/Alias(es): Has been sometimes referred to as “Night Light” or “Skunk” due to his mane.
Race: Unicorn
Gender: Male
Age: Young Stallion
-Physical Stuff-
Pelt Color: Silver’s coat fittingly enough is a very prominent shade of silver. Although it is also mixed with a dull shade of grey that form themselves in tribal style patterns all over his body. Silver was born with these patterns as they appear now.
Coat properties: Silver’s coat has two interesting attributes that separate him from other ponies. One during the daytime and the other during the night.
Daytime: During the day with sunlight, the silver shade of his coat becomes much more pronounced(pop’s out) around the grey shade. Also, the silver shade will lightly glint or sparkle. Although this is a bit hard to see from a distance it’s much more noticeable when he moves. The effect of this is magnified on bright days with clear skies as sunlight can directly penetrate his coat.
Night-time: During the night or in any place absent of light (as in a cave or such), Silver’s coat loses the effect it gained in the daylight. Instead, the silver part of his coat will begin to glow in the dark, irradiating a white light with a bright sliver tinge around him. The brightness of the glow as well as the radius of the light correlate directly to the amount of sunlight absorbed during the day. This effect is magnified when in contact with moonlight, making him even brighter.
Limitations: As far as he can tell, his body doesn’t have a limit on the amount of light he can absorb in a day. But does feel an effect of diminishing returns. So by the end of the day any extra sunlight doesn’t significantly increase the amount of time he is aglow. Silver will glow for about 2-3 hours after sundown on a “Full charge” of sunlight until all the light dissipates, leaving him to his normal appearance. Also Silver does not glow in the rain. Even if he had been in the sun all day if a bit of rain hit he wouldn’t glow that night. Essentially rain kills whatever “Charge” of sunlight he may have.
How it works: Because of Silvers unique trait many higher level unicorns took interest in him as a subject of a case study while he was young. Not unlike the bizarre magic surges experienced by newborn foals, Silvers traits are still a bit of a magical mystery although a few things have been figured out. Tests concluded that his shiny coat is a result unicorn magic running throughout his body as opposed to being primarily concentrated in the horn. Sunlight interacts with this magic essentially acting as a catalyst which is what causes the affects to his physical well-being. The shininess and glowing of his coat turns out to just be visual side effects of this process occurring. Reason why this magic needs sunlight to react, why it affects Silver negatively without sunlight, or why rain stops the reaction have remained unconfirmed. More research was to be conducted but since the magic served no practical applications, be used or even manipulated by Silver, all tests were concluded and his case summarized as just a freak occurrence.
Mane/Tail Color and Style: A balanced mix of a dirty white and black.
Eye Color: Silver has a set of very piercing yellow eyes.
Cutie Mark: Silver cutie mark is a Bright 8 sided white star.
Physique: Silver stand a bit shorter than most stallions his age, and is by no means beefy or bulky. His build seems to range in-between that of a mare and a stallion.
Clothing: Often seen wearing a thin black vest made of a high class material

-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Sunlight/moonlight, being outside, learning, debating, writing, looking at the stars, talking with other ponies, smart mares, spending time with his father, bad puns
Dislikes: being inside, Mean/ arrogant/ ignorant ponies, Clouds, Rain
Motivation: The study of other ponies and himself. He feels an incessant need to unravel the mysteries of the universe and the mind.
Strengths: Learning and understanding from things around him, including his mistakes. Has the ability to take very rational and unbiased view towards nearly anything.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Can sometimes “meddle” in other ponies affairs. His curiosity and need to know often puts him in some unfavorable situations. Considers himself an intellectual to the point where some ponies find him annoying. Gets sick without sunlight.
Fears: Cloudy days/nights, rain, the sun going out, loneliness
Personality: Silver’s personality(or at least his mood) is directly connected to how his body reacts to the sunlight and moonlight.
During the day: As his coat gains sunlight (effectively “Charging”) Silver begins to feel his mind is becoming clearer and his whole body is gaining energy. During these times he’s happy, joyful, talkative, goofy even, very friendly, and strongly affectionate. It’s also when he is at his brightest (metaphorically speaking), his ability to learn, comprehend, even his observation skills are their strongest when he’s in the sun.
During the night: So far, Silver has determined that the glowing is his body releasing the energy gained from the sun during the day. Thus bringing him down to a very relaxed and contented state. He describes it as the feeling of slowly letting out a big, deep breath. It’s also during this time that his philosophical mind opens up. Whereas the sun helps him think clearer in terms of science or math, the night helps him tap into the part of his brain that wonders about the universe.
Lack of sun: When faced without sunlight for extended periods of time, Silver progressively becomes a very, very different pony. He became aware of this at a young age and so set up an experiment recording all the symptoms as they presented themselves. His study showed results that directly rivals sleep deprivation. Starting with agitation and crankiness before moving on to more profound symptoms such as depression, anxiety, stress, memory loss, and change in appetite. Silver stopped his study after four days when he started showing physical signs of illness as he was too scared to continue.
In General: Now ignoring the concept if his coat Silver’s personality is very much like that of an intellectual/scientific pony. He looks at everything objectively and with skepticism, almost never believing in anything at face value. He tends to speak with lots of energy very quickly yet clearly almost completely void of “Um’s..” or “Ah’s..”, often making gestures with his hooves. He loves to debate and discuss the nature of ponies and the universe so be wary about getting him started as he has trouble stopping. Silver sees true value in friendship and trust, and deeply desires companionship.
History:
Silver was born and raised in Canterlot by his father. Tragically his mother became sick late during the pregnancy, and unfortunately the act a childbirth left her too weak to recover. His father, A philosophy professor at the Canterlot school, did his best to raise him with all love and understanding he could give. Therefore, when his only son began showing talent in his field essentially following in his footsteps, he couldn’t have been more proud. Silver learned nearly everything he knows now from his father. Sure the Canterlot schools did fine but they were limited by their curriculum among other things. But with his father, Silver could ask any question he could think of on any subject. His father almost always had an answer, and when he didn’t, he took the time for them to find out together. Even when it came to Silver’s connection with sun and moonlight his dad was always very reassuring. Helping in whatever way he could so they could both understand it better.
It was his father that taught Silver nearly every good value he carries with him now. How to be tolerant, compassionate, understanding, and loving of the world around him. It was his father that taught him about all the things he didn’t know. About the universe, meaning of life and just how much there’s still left out there to learn. Silver admired everything about his dad, and attributes part of it to the fact that he never pressured him to be something great or anything he wasn’t. He just told him what he knew, and let Silver decide for himself from there.
As Silver grew a few years older his knowledge and study of pony philosophy and psychology led him to being writing. It started in opinion columns which quickly grew small followings, then in academic journals where he published his first paper offering explanation on the high amount of “Snobbyness” expressed by most Canterlot citizens. The paper actually became somewhat famous among the scientific community.
It was then to his father’s surprise that Silver decided to move out. While his father wanted to protest (not wanting his only son leaving him) he knew Silver was going to want to get out on his own eventually, and Silver’s choice of Ponyville did ease his mind. Ponyville being Silver’s chosen destination partly due to its close proximity to Canterlot and also because Silver thought of it as a simple easy going town in which he can continue to study, learn, and continue writing.
