The continuous beep of her alarm clock brought Valence Bond slowly, begrudgingly, out of slumber. It was still dark out, though the greyish light of dawn was just starting. She stretched and got out of bed- or more accurately, fell out of bed after getting her hooves all tangled.
The coffee machine burbled happily as the hot water infused the grounds, and poured a strong infusion into the waiting pot. Valence inhaled slowly through her nose, enjoying the scent of it. These moments were her favorite, a tiny drop of calm before the rigors of the day really got going. Val poured herself a cup, straight black, and after downing it with a grimace poured another. the second one got cream and sugar added to it, which Val drank more slowly as she waited for the toaster to finish.
After breakfast, Valence began the long trek to her lab downtown. It was much smaller than where her career had started, but sometimes life did things like that. A couple bus rides later, and Valence was donning her familiar lab coat and looking over the notes left by some of the lab techs regarding the latest project she was working on. A chemical firm across town had accidentally created a type of plastic that was too squishy to be used for most applications, and the big bosses had asked her to come up with some kind of medical use for it.
Hours later, a frustrated- and slightly singed- Valence headed out of the lab for her lunch break. "Well, that was less than ideal," Val said out loud to nopony in particular as she trotted to a nearby deli. "At least nothing surprising can happen at the deli counter."
