Jazz music is a given of course, but in general Suzuki likes all types of "old fashioned" music. Even classical, though she prefers to listen to it rather than play it herself. When's she's has some free time she enjoys attending orchestra concerts.
Suzuki loves storms, especially the type of storms that keep you tapped inside all day. Suzuki is an introvert at heart and loves any chance to hole herself up inside. The sound of the rain on her room also creates the perfect atmosphere for composing. It's also, in her humble opinion, the perfect atmosphere for playing smooth jazz at the cafe.
If there's one thing Suzuki will never get tired of its cream soda. A bit of a childish drink, for a long while Suzuki was a bit bashful about it. She saw it as a guilty pleasure treat and until she moved to Ponyville she hid her preferences, sticking to tea and more "sophisticated" drinks. Now a days she's given up that sham and pretty much drinks cream soda exclusively.
Dislikes:
Like any musician, Suzuki has very sensitive ears. Loud noises, off pitch notes, ect. make her grind her teeth, but worst of all is electronic music. Kiki believes music should be enjoyed in its "purest, most natural form" and she sees electronic music as a deviation from that. While she knows everyone has their preferences and has nothing against ponies who enjoy this type of music, she can't stand to listen to it without getting a headache.
While Suzuki tries to be friendly to everyone she meets...she doesn't get along with all of them. She has trouble getting along with overly excitable ponies, something which she often feels bad about. She just can't keep up with them. She grew up in a very structured upbringing and dislikes surprises and sudden changes. Which tend to go hand in hand with certain ponies. That being said she tries her best to be amicable, even if a deeper connection is unlikely.
Despite being a high-society pianist, Suzuki is quite shy. She dislikes attention and has no desire to become famous in any way. Its actually one of the main reasons she decided to move to Ponyville. She felt like she could hide away in the small town and play music in peace. She has her little hole in the wall cafe and that's all she needs.
Motivation:
Suzuki wishes to do nothing more than play her beloved piano. As long as she can do that she's happy.
Strengths:
Suzuki finds it very easy to focused and motivated. Once she puts her mind to something she refuses to give up. If Suzuki has given you her word you can rest easy and know that she'll do whatever she can to do her part. Sometimes even more!
Suzuki is very empathetic and observant. She finds it easy to pick up on how others are feeling and give advice. Many a pony have found themselves sitting at her cafe, telling her their problems. If Suzuki really wanted to, she'd probably make a very good teacher.
Suzuki has a mind like a steel trap. While this skill is used to memorize music, Kiki can recall most things at the drop of a hat. This means she’s very good at finding patterns and will easily pick out discrepancies. Don't try to lie to her because she will find a flaw in your story.
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Despite her outward persona, Suzuki has an embarrassing low self-esteem. She's constantly telling herself that she's weak and unworthy. She feels like a burden on her friends and will refuse to ask for help even if she really needs it.
While it has been a few years since Suzuki left Canterlot, she still has some old habits that she can't seem to break. While she isn't as uppity as some of the unicorns from Canterlot, she still has a bit of a superior attitude. She's friendly but in a "I'm doing this because its polite, not because I actually want to" way.
Despite all her musical talent, Suzuki sings like a dying cat. This was the one thing her parents were never able to teach her, and while it is mostly a point of embarrassment a small part of Suzuki is glad that she wasn't a perfect child.
Fears:
While it may seem odd a first, Suzuki really doesn't like birds. She's not sure where the fear came from or even why she doesn't like birds, she just knows that she does. She's alright if they're hopping on the ground or perched in trees, but as soon as they come flying towards her she is out.
Like most ponies, Suzuki fears failure. Even though she's distanced herself from her family she still feels the pressure to succeed bearing down on her. The little voices in her head constantly tell her that she isn't good enough and will never succeed.
While she has mellowed out since she moved to Ponyville, Kiki still holds herself up to Canterlot's elegant standard. She's created a persona for herself and has been keeping it up for so long she doesn't know what she'd do without it.She fears that if she lets her persona crack and her friends see that she isn't the elegant, perfect pony they all though she was they'll leave her. She fears rejection more than anything else.
Overall Persona:
Suzuki is a well-learned and mature young lady who is almost always seen smiling. She is a gentle pony, with a way with music on and off the stage. Being very aware, she prefers to stop and take in details before doing, which helps her read both situations and ponies. She is a bit quirky in that she has a romantic way of speaking and is fascinated with things like ghost stories, myths, etc. Kiki has a great desire to be viewed as reliable, and even a leader, which pushes her to learn many different things so that she could help others…and not need anyone else’s help. At times, her smile and friendliness feels fake, and she doesn’t seem to hold many ponies close to her.
It seems nearly impossible to anger Suzuki, but it’s true what they say—‘still waters runs deep’. She can take a lot and pretend she doesn’t hear what people say, even at the cost of being viewed as naïve or even stupid…but once she reaches a breaking point, Kiki is revealed to have a rather vicious temper. She may be smiling on the outside, but Suzuki isn’t necessarily thinking nice things on the inside. She likes to ignore her physical limitations in fear of being ‘helpless’. She despises injustice and beneath her persuasiveness is the intent to push things to go her way. She has forgotten that vulnerability is not necessarily a weakness and only opens up to a few select ponies.
History/Background:
Suzuki grew up with a very strict upbringing, and while she liked it at first she eventually grew to resent her parents. Day in and day out the filly sat in front of the piano, standing up with a cello, or holding a violin under her chin. She was what her parents called a perfect child, quiet, respectful, talented, and above all else she was obedient. Suzuki studied hard and eventually earned her cutie mark after she composed her own piece. It wasn’t until she was a teenager that Suzuki started to act out. With so much pressure to be perfect all the time, she began to detest the instruments that she played—especially piano—because they could achieve the perfection her parents craved, and yet like herself, lacked soul in their playing. Every perfect note made her want to scream and destroy the instruments who could be what she could not. She grew irritable, lifeless, and very, very depressed. She began skipping lessons and even dyed her hair. Her parents didn’t know what to do and eventually were at their wits ends. In a last ditch attempt to reign in their daughter her parents sent her to her aunt’s house in Manehattan.
Not much changed for the first few days, Suzuki stayed in her room and avoided everyone, until one night the unicorn decided to take up her aunt’s offer to take a look around the town. After an hour or so they somehow wound up in a jazz bar. They were idly sipping their drinks when they overheard another pony complaining about how his piano player had quit last minute and now his band was without a pianist. Suzuki wasn’t going to say anything but her aunt decided that Suzuki was just the pianist for them. Desperate the stallion immediately agreed to let her play. So against her will, Kiki was pushed towards the grand piano and given sheet music. She thought of saying that she couldn’t sight read well, but that would have been a lie and she didn't think it would get her off the stage either. She was uncertain at first but once the music started up the notes were flowing freely from her hooves. She remembered why she loved the piano so much and started to tear up, as happy as she had been when she got her cutie mark. She couldn’t believe how different jazz was from classical but she knew one thing, she was in love. When the song stopped she knew she was far from perfect, but judging by the crowd no one seemed to notice. They played a few more songs before exiting the stage. The band was so delighted that they invited Suzuki to come play with them again. She accepted the offer and slowly started to come to terms with herself.
She returned home after a year and eventually came to terms with her parents. She reconciled with her friends and returned to her lessons, though under a much more free schedule. She grew older and when the time was right she moved to Ponyville. She became a waitress but hoped to open her own jazz cafe. After a few years of slaving, saving every penny she could, she finally achieved her dream. She opened her cafe, a little hole in the wall place, and now spends every day doing what she loves.
