-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Quiet is the most amazing thing to ever exist to Mosaic. It’s so calming and relaxing, and allows her to think and focus more easily. Books are definitely the best thing ever invented. It doesn’t matter what topic they are on; fiction, science, weather, tutorials, Mosaic will devour them all. Classical music is definitely the greatest of all the genres because it makes up what thoughts and emotions sound like. Astronomy is something Mosaic finds highly fascinating, and will even wake up in the middle of the night just to gaze at the stars.
Dislikes: Loud noises are the bane of Mosaic’s existence. They are painful to her ears and quite the irritation. Any kind of distraction from what she is trying to focus on is typically met with a warning glare unless it is one of her parents or very important. Being unable to do the things her sister is able to do like walk and run and play and jump. Being stuck in the house all the time. Although she might not have the physical strength to go very far, it gets too stuffy in the house.
Motivation: Mosaic hasn’t found her motivation just yet. She wants to be able to run and play with her sister, but she is physically unable to right now. As much as she loves books and reading, she definitely wants more out of life than a dusty old library.
Strengths: Art, music, trivia, puzzles (all activities she and her sister do together) intelligent, well read, large vocabulary for her age, has a very large attention span (she can sit and read through a book in one go, only stopping for brief breaks)
Weaknesses/Flaws: gets tired or sick easily, she tends to be fairly vain, can also be the jealous type and a bit vindictive, doesn’t talk about what’s bothering her, in fact, she doesn’t talk much at all
Fears: being truly alone, her sister getting hurt or leaving her or going somewhere she can’t follow, spiders
Overall Persona: Mosaic is the quieter and more pensive of the twins, in fact, of the whole family. Due to her physical limitations, she spends most of her time perched upon a rather large cushion in the library reading book after book. When she’s not reading, she is listening to her classical music, playing the piano, coloring or doing puzzles. Every once in a while, Myriad will get a bit too rowdy while the two are playing and their parents will separate the two until she calms herself down. Mosaic really doesn’t like to be separated from her sister, in fact she can be a bit clingy at times. She is even more clingy when it comes to her brother, since he was the one who taught them about music and books and art. He was also their in house foal sitter for when their parents had to work.
When it comes to strangers, however, Mosaic is extremely shy. She will hide behind a book and pretend like she doesn’t want to be bothered just so she doesn’t have to talk to them. Not that she doesn’t want to make friends, because she does, it’s just that being social doesn’t come to her as easily as it does her twin and older brother. The only way to get her talking is to start up a conversation about something she takes interest in. To do that, however, obviously requires prior knowledge to the things she’s interested in, which you won’t get from her save for the title of whatever book she happens to be reading at the time.
Mosaic also spends a great deal of time day dreaming. More often than not she’ll be thinking of one of her mare’s tails and how the story would have changed if a few details had been different, or if a character had been removed, replaced, or even added. She also thinks a lot about the stars, and has occasionally wondered what it would be like to travel to them, if there are other worlds out there just out of reach. She may be young, but she’s read enough books to put a bunch of questions in her head that she’s much too shy to ask.
History/Background: Originally born in Stratusburg, Mosaic is the younger of a pair of twin fillies. While it may be normal for fillies to be a bit more fragile than colts, this particular pair were born even more so. It seemed as though the two were constantly sick to the point where the family could only take their fillies home if they hired a live in nurse pony to help out. The family was originally told that it was common for any set of multiple births to have a few health issues for the first few months, but that the two should begin to gain strength soon. They were only supposed to be slightly delayed in their development, but it took longer than expected.
While Myriad had the drive to push herself and exercise more, Mosaic just could never bring herself to so much as try to walk let alone fly. She simply didn’t have her sister’s energy, and would get tired after only a few moments every time she made any sort of attempt. She hid it from her sister, but her parents and older brother always knew when Mosaic had been crying. She would get so frustrated with herself for being unable to do the simplest of tasks that she would just curl up in a ball somewhere and cry silently until some pony came and found her to comfort her or she fell asleep.
It was around this time that Silver Lining introduced Mosaic to books. Sure they had always been around, but most of her foal books were picture books with simple story lines. No, the books that her brother brought her had a lot more words, and fewer pictures. They spent a lot of time reading together, sometimes just the two of them, other times all three siblings would be huddled together in a blanket fort reading stories and pretending to be the characters.
As the three grew older, Silver Lining eventually grew old enough to strike out on his own, leaving the twins without their brother. Sure they still had each other and their parents, but it wasn’t the same. Silver Lining just had this natural ability to cater to each of the twins’ needs separately. He had the patience and energy to deal with Myriad, and was reserved enough to be with Mosaic as well.
As if her brother leaving wasn’t bad enough, Mosaic took off to flight school without her, something Mosaic found to be very selfish of her sister. Sure the younger filly was more fragile and hadn’t been strong enough, but she felt betrayed and had hoped that her sister would get sick while at flight camp and have to come home early. To her horror, her wish came true as Myriad fell ill halfway through flight camp and had to come home. Mosaic felt so bad about having had such a wish that she began to grow distant, even from her own twin. She threw herself more into her books just to avoid having to have contact with her. To make matters worse, both fillies were sent to flight camp, and Myriad was actually helping Mosaic with some of the exercises.
Shortly after returning from flight camp, the family decided that it was possible that living at such high altitude was a contributing factor in the twins’ fragile health. While Myriad wasn’t nearly as sickly as her sister, she did still get sick very easily. Their parents believed that if they took their daughters to the ground, and in a sparsely populated small town at that, that perhaps both of their daughters might begin the healing process. So the two parents searched for a place that fit their criteria: A small town, with a small population, no pollution, quiet, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and, of course, a high quality medical facility. To their delight, they found that Ponyville not only fit those very criteria, but it was within a day’s flight to Canterlot.
It hasn’t been very long since the family moved into town, and Mosaic still refuses to leave her library, but it’s more out of shame than anything else. She still feels bad for having negative feelings towards her sister, and while she does share the same desire to go outside and make new friends and get to know the new neighborhood, she is just far too shy to allow herself to even make an attempt to leave.
