-General Stuff-
Name: Valence Bond
Nickname/Alias(es): Val
Race: Unicorn
Gender: Female
Age: Mare, mid 30's
Additional Status: Val doesn't wear much outside the lab. She's not very good with animals- stems from her line of work, with the odd smells and occasional loud noises or bright lights. The exception is her chinchilla, Piglett, who doesn't seem to mind. Of course, he spends most of his time in the hidey house she made for him out of a broken flower pot, but when he is out and about, he seems pretty chill about everything. She likes to tell ponies he is chinchilling, a pun that makes him roll his eyes every single time.
-Physical Stuff-
Pelt Color: Cream
Mane/Tail Color and Style: two-tone Pink and straight, though she usually keeps it braided. It's easier to control that way, and keeps her mane out of her face when she's working. For the most part, anyway.
Eye Color: Purple, though it's sometimes hard to tell behind her glasses. And goggles. Wearing goggles over glasses makes it tough to see her actual eyes sometimes.
Cutie Mark: Valence's cutie mark is a representation of an atom
Other Scars/Markings: For a mare that tends to be so focused on one thing that she often bonks into things, or in her particular line of work, you'd think she'd have a bunch of scars everywhere. Surprisingly enough, she doesn't- there's been some coat and/or mane singes here and there, but no scarring.
Physique: Val has a pretty average build, though a bit on the thin side.
-Social Stuff-
Current Residence: Manehattan
Job: Research Chemist
Mother: Star Lily
Father: Star Driver
Sibling(s): none
Other Family: none
Closest Friends: in progress
Courting/Courted By: in progress
Mate: none currently. Former mate now deceased
Foal(s): Super Nova, age 6
-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Learning things. Val is deeply curious at heart, and loves discovering something she didn't know before... though she enjoys more 'hooves on' methods, and is not a big fan of just reading about something. She likes to see it for herself.
Dislikes: Carrots, the kind of rain that's tiny super cold droplets that just seem to hang in the air, other ponies assuming she isn't as smart as she is, or ponies judging her for being a single mom
Motivation: curiosity drives pretty much everything she does. She wants to know how things work- and having a pretty good idea about sciencey things, Val has made it a personal goal to try and figure out how ponies and being around ponies works. It's been tough though, since ponies don't have the same ironclad, inviolable rules that physics/chemistry has. If she adds sodium carbonate to a solution of 0.5% borax suspended in distilled water and heats it to 120 degrees, it will always make surfactant- but one pony may find that interesting and another pony may be utterly bored. This unpredictability confuses her, but the fact that she doesn't understand intrigues her to the point that she is curious to know more.
Strengths: Chemistry is her biggest strength- she knows a lot about a lot of stuff, and knows how to make useful stuff out of not so useful stuff. And when she doesn't know something, she is pretty good at trying to figure it out. Although the Scientific Method doesn't always pan out, especially with other ponies, it does come in handy for a LOT of things.
Weaknesses/Flaws: social anxiety. Val has trouble making friends, and it's hard for her to relate to other ponies. She always feels like the fifth wheel, never knowing what to say or how to act, and when she gets flustered she tends to rattle on about whatever pops into her head in the hopes that something in there may be the right thing to say.
Fears: Valence's biggest fear is that something she makes will make ponies sick. The thought of her efforts making things worse for anypony, instead of helping them, is terrifying. She also gets creeped out by bugs, and intensely dislikes heights.
Overall Persona: Valence is an inherently curious pony, and that lends itself to optimism, since there is always opportunity for discovery. She tries to see even failures as an opportunity to learn something, even if it doesn't always feel that way. She is intelligent, but she doesn't really understand how to interact with other ponies- not that it stops her from trying. She likes other ponies, but she just doesn't really get how to talk to them. She tends to be quiet and reserved most of the time, though when she gets talking about something she actually knows about, she won't shut up.
What she lacks in ability, however, she makes up for in enthusiasm. Being of a naturally inquisitive mind, Val has little reservation about trying new things, even if they seem scary at first. That's not to say she's into extremes, but if the opportunity came up to try bungee jumping or scuba diving for example, she would at least give it a shot. This has led to some interesting adventures, though her encounter with particularly spicy food was perhaps the only one she genuinely regrets.
With her career proceeding as she hoped it would, Val has made a concerted effort to concentrate on bringing her social life up to par, and despite feeling awkward and out of place at times, she has made an effort to go out at least twice a month for the sole purpose of meeting somepony new and having a conversation- with sometimes hilarious results, like the time she went to a karaoke night and chatted up the DJ about her work with Tardigrades. Thus far, her efforts have not yielded the results she would like, but the importance of the task keeps her motivated to keep trying.
History/Background: Valence has always been a highly curious pony, and from the time she was a foal, she has tried to understand how things work. Although she was always interested in mechanical things, and loved watching machines like locomotives or record players work, what really fascinated her was medicine. How some plants- which were poisonous- could be turned into things like medicines or antidotes and any number of helpful things.
As fascinating as it was, though, studying medicine formally wasn't for her. She didn't want to be a doctor or a nurse, she was more interested in making things. That, and if she made a mistake, the worst that would happen is some ruined samples, not anypony dying. She decided to make chemistry the focus of her studies, specifically pharmacology.
