This is less of a suggestion for changes on this site, and more of a suggestion to the members here who would like notifications of various happenings here, without having to use the Email notifications this site provides, or require them to keep this site open.
I've recently found an add-on for firefox (though there are versions of it for Chrome, Opera, and versions for Android, iOS, as well as a desktop application are in developement.) distill.io/apps/web-monitor
With this add-on, you can have your browser (Regardless of whatever pages you have open) monitor specific pages for changes, or even specific elements within a page. For instance, I have it monitor the "messages" button on the home page for that neat little number icon indicating I have a new message. I also have it monitor the Shoutbox for new posts (Filtering out any posts made by myself, of course) and I have it monitoring a few specific threads for new posts (Again, setting filters to exclude posts by yours truly). All that is required is your browser be open, you don't have to be on the page.
When certain conditions are met, I receive nice little *Ping* sound with a small pop-up in the bottom of the screen, alerting me of a change.
It can also be configured to send push notifications to your mobile phone. (I haven't tested this, I'm currently hoping it's not a subscriber only feature)
With this, I am always aware of the things I want to be kept aware of, without having to rely on Email notifications (Which don't work with the chat box anyway) or even have to be on my computer, so long as I'm within Earshot of it.
