It wasn’t something Yellowjacket made a practice of, but every now and again he wanted to try and really use magic. There was just a part of him that couldn’t get past the fact that he was a unicorn who could only do really simple levitation. Unicorns could do so many things, and even an average unicorn could do more than the yellow-coated stallion. Even using magic to lift his smoker for when he had to calm down the bees was a struggle sometimes. Of course the fact that his sister had always been better at magic than him didn’t help, especially when they were growing up. And while his parents had tried to be supportive, Yellowjacket would be lying if he said he wasn’t glad that he’d moved out of Ponyville proper and was living somewhere he could make his own way. After all, very few ponies came this way down Whitetail Woods, and those who did were usually more than happy to stop and chat for some refreshments, which he was only too happy to provide for some company.
Because he didn’t dislike other ponies, he just didn’t like having to live up to the expectation of being a unicorn when he was scarcely better than a foal with magic. It was this that every so often led the stallion to being in what was essentially his front yard and trying to lift various objects. He couldn’t rightly use the back of his home, considering it was where his apiary was. The stallion took a deep breath and looked at the pencil on the ground in front of him. Off to the side he’d gathered a small clump of everyday items, things he’d really like to be able to hold and most of them more than one at a time. His horn glowed with a faint aura of ice blue, the same color as his eyes, and he focused on the pencil. Slowly, it began to lift into the air.
Yellowjacket smiled and brought the pencil up to about eye level, just focusing on holding it there. Maybe he could try picking up another object at the same time? Glancing over to the pile, the unicorn spotted a notepad sitting on the top and decided that would do. Focusing, the unicorn’s horn glowed a bit brighter as the same icy blue aura started to surround the notepad. The aura didn’t get very far before it started to slow down then stop advancing altogether. With a huff of frustration Yellowjacket stopped his hoof on the ground and the resulting loss of focus made the pencil drop too as his horn stopped glowing. Well he’d almost been able to hold two things at once. The sound of approaching hoofsteps caught his attention, and Yellowjacket turned to see somepony coming up the path towards him. He really hoped they hadn’t seen his pitiful attempts at magic…
