Sunshine Swirl arrived at the Bell, Book & Candle shop. It was decorated for the holiday like many of the shops along the narrow Canterlot cobblestone streets. A Jack-o’-lantern smiled at her from beside the string-cobweb strewn shop door. The shop window display showcased various old books, some lovely bells, and many scented black or orange candles.
Sunshine had known Esmeralda, the old unicorn mare that owned this shop, for years. Esmeralda wasn’t one to spook easily. When she stopped in to Sunshine Swirl's office claiming that her store was “Haunted”, Sunshine could scarcely believe it. Not one to turn down a mystery she told Esmeralda that she would come and investigate.
"There are no such things as Ghosts!" Sunshine told herself. "It’s scientifically impossible."
She was about to open the door when a blue pegasus stallion burst out of the shop. “GHOSTS!” he shouted. Grabbing her, he added, “Do not go in there!” His eyes were wide with fear. Before Sunshine could speak, the pegasus launched himself into the sky.
Sunshine walked in to find Esmeralda with her head down on the counter.
Sunshine asked, "Esmeralda, are you okay?”
Esmeralda raised her head, “Oh, I’ve been better, dearie. Just lost another customer because of that.” She pointed a hoof towards a bronze hoof-bell laying on the floor. “It started floating and ringing by itself.”
"And you’re sure there’s no unicorn colt prankster hiding somewhere?” Sunshine looked around the shop. There were plenty of places to hide. Shelves and trunks filled with candles, bells, and old books.
Esmeralda shook her head no, and swooshed her tail angrily. "If only it were that simple."
Sunshine Swirl examined the bell. “Have you moved it since it floated?”
“No. It happened right before you arrived.”
Focusing her magic, Sunshine Swirl lightly stroked the bell looking for traces of the spell that had moved it. It definitely had an odd resonance to it… Similar to Levitation, but not the basic Levitation Spell taught in Magic Kindergarten. She ruled out Automation Magic, and Come to Life Magic as well.
Sunshine Swirl was stumped. Perhaps there really are ghosts?! She smiled nervously at Esmeralda. “This might take longer than I thought."
