-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Everything art, or having to do with it. Singing, poetry, dancing, painting, drawing, music, interpretive mime-- anything that could be considered art is adored. He also has a weakness for simple, down-home cooking, sweet fruits, and the open road. Aside from that, his tastes tend to change with every new place he visits, and every new experience he has.
Dislikes: The bland and the dull, manual labor, pompous ponies who use fine art as a medium through which to be more fancy. Staying in place for too long, and letting things get stale through repetition.
Motivation: Art, specifically drawing, is his passion. To make other ponies' coats into walking works of art is what he lives for. Every pony he meets is a blank canvass, and he would love nothing more than to make each and every one of them into something greater than the sum of their parts.
Strengths: He's strong of will, and an immense imagination compliments his natural artistic talents. He's also deeply compassionate, and wears his heart on his sleeve.
Weaknesses/Flaws: The downside to having one's emotions bubble close to the surface is a propensity to speak one's mind without thinking. This is something Zabia is known for doing often, as well as having problems committing to anything not related to art. Relationships tend to be intense but brief, and he may sometimes come across as lazy, as he abhors manual labor. He is also quite judgmental and overly critical of others, especially when it comes to fashion.
Fears: More than anything else, Zabia is afraid of monotony. A boring minute is a wasted minute, and he takes pains to have as few wasted moments as possible. He also has a deep fear of having his own work criticized, or ridiculed. He's also worried about ponies discovering his well-kept secret.
Overall Persona: Zabia is, in a word, an artist. Art is what gets him up in the morning, what puts food in his belly and patches in the holes in his tent, and moves him through the day. He sometimes entertains fantasies of being an art critic, passing his judgment on the very finest masterpieces and having a crowd of ponies nodding their heads in agreement with everything he says. Sailing to new lands abroad and seeing everything this world has to offer, eating the local cuisine, admiring (or insulting) the architecture, courting the pretty mares. And, of course, having his body art recognized around the globe for the priceless masterpieces they are. This is the life he dreams of, if only he had money. Instead, he scratches out a passable existence travelling place to place and selling his wares in whatever town he’s staying in. He also dreams of having a house of his own, one he can take with him while he travels. But such a thing could never exist! Right?
Another word that could be used to describe Zabia is ‘conceited’. He’s a great artist and he knows it, but he outwardly puffs himself up beyond what his talent would afford him. For a glorified hobo with a henna bag, he’s also quite smug, freely offering his two cents on any given subject, whether or not he was being asked for it, and usually without really thinking things through. His smart mouth has gotten him in trouble countless times, and since he never seems to learn his lesson, it likely will many times in the future. It’s not to say he’s a bad guy; he just tends to act prissy and shoot off at the mouth.
But as any artist knows, art is at the junction of Absolute Narcissism and Crippling Self-Doubt. He secretly fears his work is never good enough, and uses bravado to hide this fact. His ego is a defense mechanism used to mask his many, many insecurities. This reflects his courting rituals, with him coming on too strong for most, smug and self-centered, and then being crestfallen when he’s rejected. All that bluster and much ado about himself is just a means to hide the fact that he also doubts his own attractiveness and the quality of his personality. Ironically, this causes him to sometimes come across as incredibly vain.
With all this being said, Zabia is in general a very nice and talented zebra, and if you can see past the wall of narcissism he put up as a front, you might just meet the kind-hearted, insecure and loving individual that lies beneath.
History/Background: Zabia was born, like most zebras, in their home country of Zebrica. But unlike most zebras, Zabia's stripes weren't the usual dark grey-- in fact, unless you look closely, you would think he didn't have any stripes at all! A zebra with no stripes is hardly a zebra at all, the others would say, and so he spent most of his foalhood being mocked and ridiculed for his genetic eccentricity. It wasn't until he discovered his talent for drawing that he got the idea to make his own. And his own did he make, for the first time when he was about 10. With designs temporary and whimsical, he dazzled the other zebras with some of the most unique and amazing stripes they'd ever seen. Eventually, he became an adult, and caught a boat to Equestria, where he heard ponies would pay good money for art. Ever since then, he's been inundated in the Equestrian art scene, travelling from place to place and peddling his unique henna designs to anypony with the scratch and the desire to be transformed into a beautiful work of art.
