Likes:Music, foods, having fun, parties, A crazy night. a good days work.
Dislikes:Swindlers, Liars, Wasting time, Irresponsibility, Stagnancy.
Motivation:Mark time is a patron of the arts. He has read many of the great equestrian classics (and even has a bit of a knack for writing) and is a commoner at the art galleries and exhibitions. But none of this compares to his love for music. Mark Time has been seen all around the music scene, from raving out all night covered in glowstick fluid, to attending wind concerts, dressed in a suit and tie.
His love of music drove him to play it. His instrument of choice is the trombone. He owns one, and is a great player. He can play anything from symphony to rock to jazz (which he prefers) He is always happy to share his knowledge to anyone that asks.
Strengths: He is a strong and able leader, and has accumulated an at least basic level of proficiency in many practical skills, but his most admirable qualities are humbleness in victory, and grace in the face of defeat and failure.
Weaknesses/Flaws:He tends to get overly angry when something doesn't go like he plans. He also tends to block others out others when hes absorbed in a task. He also has trouble following logical paths, like the steps to solving an equation, or tying a knot.
Fears:Mark Time is afraid of nothing, literally. Oblivion unsettles him and the thought of losing the sight and feel and taste of the world is too much to bear. To the lengths that he will even avoid sleep to avoid not having a dream.
Overall Persona:Mark Time thinks and plans according to his tuned moral compass. When making a decision, he will always factor the morals into the mix. Above all he values integrity, honor, and respect, and as such, he will put his claims where his mouth is. His word is his bond, and he respects the word of others as such. Mark Time has logic based of common sense, and sometimes has difficulty to reason things out, like the processes for activities. When in a political or similar situation, he will draw an opinion only after observing each and every side of the argument. He is also odd and eccentric and knows it, and thoroughly enjoys it. This, coupled with a certain degree of wealth from his income, gives him leave to explore all manner of oddity, and will do things for the experience and just for the sake of doing them. He has been found sleeping on rooftops, throwing small bags of money out of his window randomly, spending a lot on weird items, using archaic language in every day situations, playing to animals, doing other ponies' chores, spending extended time in the wilderness, and wearing his band uniform are some of the stuff he does. He takes what he gets out of it and puts them into his music. He also feels it necessary to live in balance between the lifestyles of the “normal” and the Sophisticated. For this reason, he works as a musician, and a store clerk. Hes very easy going.
History/Background: Mark Time was born and raised in Ponyville, to a family with high regards to values like Responsibility, Initiative, Education, Dedication, and the joy of a good days work. His father would always play music for him, showed him old family drawings, and his favorite works of literature. These are his favorite childhood memories, because his father worked as a construction worker. The hours were long, and he came home when Mark was asleep most of the time. Mark's interest in music began when his father took him into town to see the parades. He admired the marchers, the regality of the scene, and how disciplined they looked. He picked up a trombone he bought with some bits he saved up, and started to learn how to play. He picked up the ability to read music as he went along.
Mark Time eventually moved away from Ponyville to pursue a life of art, and what better place to do that than Canterlot? Along with absorbing the sophisticated culture, he dreamed of joining the premier drum corps, the Canterlot Ursa Minors. This was one of the best bands in all of Equestria. He had been conditioning and training for this every day, while he bolstered up his confidence and funds. When he had enough money, Mark paid his due and was sent to band camp in Appleoossa. He knew that this would be as close to hell a pony would get, but he was ready. All of the other ponies were bigger and seemingly tougher, and he was constantly ridiculed for being the only blank flank. During that week in the desert, his spirit was crushed, his body was battered and bruised, and his mind was strained to its maximum, with the constant reminder that he could leave. Escape was just a hoof raise away. But he had made the cut. He had fallen down on the last day, and the drum major helped him up. Some of the other marchers were glancing at Mark's flank with a smile. Mark time had earned his cutie mark. That season, they took second in champions. The practicing and preforming, and lessons learned, satisfy all of his values he learned as a younger colt, but it didn't end there.
While his cutie mark suggested that he was destined for leadership, he had to prove it to his band and his superiors. The next 3 years of his life proved increasingly difficult. For his dedication and commitment, he was tasked with being the section leader of the trombones. This gave him the responsibility of taking care of his section and fostering their excellence. At first, the group was rowdy and defiant, and refused to work with him. Mark would punish them with intense physical activity and revoking of privileges, causing them to hate him more and resist his efforts. Halfway through the season, he was told that if they weren't going to shape up, they would all be cut. Mark worried and fretted, but soon came up with a plan. Instead of a whole weekend of drill and music practice, he took his section camping. Under the stars, they bonded, and were able to smooth out the issues not only as peers, but as friends. Mark finally understood that leadership is just as much an exercise in friendship as it is an practice of discipline. They came back and set to work, and quickly became the band's standard of excellence. That year, he won his first championship title.
When the next summer started, he was given the position of head logistics manager. This meant that, in addition to marching, he and his team were responsible for keeping the band going. He himself had trouble learning some of the skills, but where he failed, his friends helped him, and vice versa. Soon, they had knowledge of things like how to build sets, dress wounds and heal ailments, landscape and maintain the field, sew uniforms, cook, organize schedules, fix broken instruments, repair vehicles, clean rehearsal spaces, manage funds, cast basic weather manipulation and appearance altering spells, and making and selling branded items like jackets and mugs, among other things.
The next year, the directors and board held a meeting to see where band camp would be held. They gave the choice to Mark, specifically to challenge him, planning to use a hostile environment to put enough pressure on him to make him crack. Between the Everfree forest and the Windigo Alps, he chose the forest. Upon arrival, things went surprisingly well, until a manticore decided to chow down on on of the new members that had wandered off. The manticore had gone, but the young mare was seriously hurt. Immediately, Mark Time calmed the ensuing chaos, and helped to save her life. After this incident, the camp was moved to Ponyville at Mark Times behest, and he was unanimously voted drum major, not because of his conducting or discipline, but for his leadership in the face of danger. His vision was to lead the band to the top once more. Everything was improved upon from last year. Championships came, and it seemed his vision was about to be realized.
Last place.
He was crushed, but quickly realized that he had done his best, and so had the band. He consoled the band, and reminded them of the work they put into their craft. Ever since, Mark Time has been voted drum major.
Today, Mark Time works and lives in a general goods store in the off season. He's bought his own Canterlot house with the money from marching band, and is it's drum major. Hes got a few good friends, and plays jazz in local clubs and sits in with big bands. He can be seen in Ponyville, or Canterlot. He offers free music lessons, because he believes that music should be shared, and he gets enough money already.
