Here we go - another OC I have been working on for the past couple of weeks. Finally got her design and personality worked out! n__n
-General Stuff-
Name: Henna Brocade
Nickname/Alias(es): Henna
Race: Unicorn, but a type of Marwari horse breed (from India, in real world, province of Rajasthan)
Gender: Female
Age: 19 years old
Additional Status: Her ears curl inwards at the tips, a trademark genetic feature of the Marwari horse breed. She wears a brocade silk dupatta (scarf) draped over her head and back, with little silver beads along the hemline. She also wears a matha-patthi (literally translates to wrap-around-forehead - a piece of jewellery that wraps around the hairline, with a tikka-jewel piece dangling in the centre of the forehead), two necklaces and a high row of bangles. Just below the tikka piece, between her eyes, there are three dots placed in an upside down triangle with makeup - like a bindi. Her aura is also a shade of yellow/gold.
-Physical Stuff-
Pelt Color: Deep Chocolate Brown with a tint of red, the bottom half of her legs being a creamy white shade. She even has strip of white coming down from her forehead, to just above her muzzle.
Mane/Tail Color and Style: Her mane and tail are jet black, and glossy. Henna keeps her mane parted from her horn, oiled and tightly pulled back into a braid that falls over her shoulder. Her tail is in the same manner oiled and braided tightly. Gajra (jasmine flower garland) are interwoven throughout both mane and tail braids, tied off with another round of Gajra, in her traditional style.
Eye Color: Amber
Cutie Mark: Paisley flower design in the mehndi/henna style.
Other Scars/Markings: Nothing else - all is noted in the above sections.
Physique: Average height and build - with the exception of her curved ears.
-Social Stuff-
Current Residence: Originally from a neighbouring village to Neigh Delhi. Henna and her family live in a cluster of huts and open roof houses, a very close knit community that work together to create luxurious fabrics; weaving, dyeing, washing, cutting and selling in the marketplaces of Neigh Delhi. Henna likes to take the fabrics out of Neigh Delhi into Equestria every now and again, oftentimes travelling on her own.
Job: Fabric Weaver / Trade Market
Mother: Bandhani
Father: Khadi
Sibling(s): 3 Siblings - Two elder sisters and one younger brother
Other Family: Grandparents from both sides, aunts and uncles, cousins (will update when I come up with names, but she has a large family)
Closest Friends: Her brother and sisters, as well as the young ponies in her community (will update when I come up with names)
Courting/Courted By: N/A
Mate: N/A
Foal(s): N/A
-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Henna loves her family. More than anything else in the world, they are what make her who she is. They give her love, laughter, happiness and security. If anything happened to any of her family members, she would be devastated. Because she lives in such a small village that consists of her entire family, and several other families, they all live in harmony and work to help each other out. They create exquisite fabrics, from different materials, and add colour, beauty and life into them so they can go on to become anything a pony wants that piece of fabric to become.
Tying her family business in, she loves helping out in any way she can. She enjoys weaving fabrics, and in this is where she discovered her talent. Working with silk and creating brocade fabrics is her speciality. She does a lovely job, and her family praise her for her efforts.
Henna also enjoys Neigh Delhi food - traditional, spicy, and such a wonderful variety of vegetarian cuisine with exotic spices - makes her long the taste of other worldly foods.
She loves her little brother, and looks up to her older sisters. Having a large family means that there is always someone or another to talk to, and talking is something she really likes to do. Having in depth conversations about some subject matter or another, finding true meaning, or just relaxing and having a good cup of masala chai (spicy tea).
Henna loves to wear jewellery and fine fabrics herself. Bangles, necklaces, Gajras (floral garlands), and just overall being a girly girl. She likes being fancy in her own traditional way.
Dislikes: Henna dislikes the silence. Despite her living in a bit of a closed off community, they are all chattery and laughing and singing and enjoying their time as they are working. Even going into Neigh Delhi, the hustle and bustle of life, has her longing for it more. If she was isolated from everypony, she would go crazy. It would make her heart sink faster than anything else. She dislikes quiet and shy ponies. She doesn't like it when another is rude or mean, or even just downright grumpy. She can't handle those kinds of ponies. Again, she comes from a big family and is used to a large group setting.
Coming from a warm weather climate, she doesn't like the cold. Snow, ice, frost - winter is that one season that she wishes were warm again. Henna doesn't like to bundle up in woollen fabrics just to keep herself from getting cold and sick.
Motivation: Henna's motivation is that she wants to continue the family tradition of fabric creation. Continue to source materials, continue to provide exotic fabrics to the world of Equestria and beyond. Give them a taste of what they are missing. Show them that the traditional crafts, the love and effort put into them, is well worth it in the end.
Strengths: Just like her family, she has a strong skill in fabric weaving - specifically, with silk. She can do all sorts of designs with silk, gold and silver thread - beautiful, intricate paisley designs. Bright, colourful 'modernesque' designs, with a traditional twist. She mostly likes to make 'dupattas' and 'saris', long pieces of fabric that can be readily worn as is without cutting or piecing them together.
She is also just generally happy with herself - never really put in an argument with another pony. She is kind and generous, helping her family and friends wherever they need the assistance. Be it mixing colours for the perfect dye shade, or just getting the loom ready and feeding the thread through with her magical skill.
She can easily make friends and get into a conversation right away. She's not a 'hyper' or 'chatty' pony - she is calm and collected but does get excited every now and then and can manage to speak with strangers freely. After all, her work depends on her making new customers that will want to come back for more of their fabric.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Coming from a foreign land, she has a hard time adapting. In Equestria, it seems as though the modern ways are the norm and she is unable to wrap her mind around it. Ponies living on their own, mostly in a very small family setting, makes her a bit squeamish compared to her lifestyle.
Henna also has a bit of a language barrier problem - speaking and understanding the common tongue and separating it from her mother tongue is difficult. She does her best to find a way of interpreting her meaning, even if it is through gestures and sounds.
Since she is a unicorn, she can do the simple tasks such as levitation and suspension. She isn't as strong with magical skills, or spells as some other advanced unicorns are.
Fears: Losing her family. This is her number one fear. Without her family, she is nothing. Without her family, she loses everything. If she lost that, she wouldn't know what to do. Her family and their fabric making business would be destroyed. Taken off the map.
She is also afraid of snakes - popular to belief that Neigh Delhi and surrounding residents enjoy a good snake-charming every now and again - she cannot for the life of her be near one without screaming. Her older sister had a pet snake that often times chased after her for play and fun when she was a young foal, and this is why she can't see them as anything but terrifying.
Another thing she is afraid of is losing her sense of sight and colour. Colour is everything to her, and she enjoys playing with dye and experimenting on different fabrics. If she lost her sight or even sense of colour, she would be devastated and unable to create beautiful clothing as she desires.
Overall Persona: Henna Brocade is a hard working pony, and enjoys the life she shares with her family and community. When she's not working, she plays with her cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, the neighbours, and comes up with fun and interesting games to get them all involved in. Some days, they might play hide and seek. Throw a ball around, chase each other under the sun. Other days, if it's raining, they will put up the tents and umbrellas and sing songs and even dance. Her community is mixed with both unicorns and earth ponies - there are no pegasi. She's always wanted to become friends with pegasus ponies, and she is ever fascinated by their flight ability when they are seen overhead.
She can't help but want to make everyone around her happy with simple pleasures. It boggles her mind when she sees someone who is depressed or 'down' in their mood. She has a hard time understanding why somepony can be so sad when her own life has been all love and joy. Although she has trouble speaking the common tongue, she'll find a way to get her point across be it with the limited words she knows and gestures. Henna will try to learn as many words as she can to keep a conversation going, because talking and sharing life experiences with other ponies is something she enjoys.
Henna looks up to her elder sisters as her role models and inspiration. They do fine and delicate work such as tying and dying scarves. Her mother is a master when it comes to the tie-dye method, intricate designs amongst pops of bright colour blocks. She hopes to aspire to their level one day, and tie the fine pieces of thread to create the looks and floral designs that her sisters and mother do.
The elders of her community have said that the work they do has been in their blood for generations, and it will never change with the way they work and create. Although Henna agrees with their point of view, she can't help but want to go out into the world and see if there are more convenient ways of doing their work - if it is possible at all.
History or Background (Optional) : Henna comes from a small community village near Neigh Delhi, and lives with her entire family. Her family run a fabric making business, where they create all sorts of materials from silk, chiffon, georgette, bhandani, khadi and even the odd fine cotton, or 'chicken' fabric (lacy cotton with eyelets).
The village is comprised of small huts and open roof houses - walls erected from the dry and dusty earth to a private height, but not enclosed from the sky. Small, narrow aisles make up for the little streets, but it's mostly an open community where every pony living there knows one another, with all but a handful of different families living there. Population wise, they make up a great number of ponies there.
The work they do is transported to the street vendors and marketplaces of Neigh Delhi, often joined side by side with the spice and powdered colour dye merchants and tailors.
Henna would often go into the city with her parents and siblings as they venture to sell their product, enjoying the city bustle. It reminds her of her little community - although no big skyscrapers occupy their small piece of land, they are a loud and rowdy bunch with anecdotes galore.
(The history section will be continuously worked on as I develop more information to add into her history, that pertains to her character. Mostly, everything else is noted in the above sections respectively)
