Further personal criteria include, but are not restricted to;
The Mentorship Program
The Mentorship Program was developed between both guard factions for the sake of training auxiliary and reserve guards for times of desperate need, such as a catastrophe or an invasion. The program is a coalition between both guard factions, in which possible recruits are taken and given to mentors so that they are able to be given practical experience and further their training. Though not counted among the active forces, the auxiliary and reserve forces top a minimum of 300 guards, combined between Lunar and Solar mentorship programs. Recruits enrolled in the mentorship program are assigned to a Private for a certain duration of time, during which, the recruit is expected to learn what it means to be a member of the royal guard, and are expected to uphold the laws and assist their mentors when they are able. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of a trainee to become a singular unit with their mentor, to increase squadron cohesion, and to decrease the likelihood of casualties in combat. In a combat situation, auxiliary trainees are instructed to provide solely support roles, including but not limited to; medical support, magic artillery, or long range combat support. The minimum trainee age is two years earlier then the minimum age to sign up for the royal guard, allowing trainees to shorten their formal training time as a result of their field experience.
First and Last Line
Both factions of the Guard are reserved as first and last lines of defense for the rulers of Equestria. The Guard factions are found where the princesses are found, though there are militant factions that operate similarly in other areas around Equestria as peacekeepers and defensive forces. For the Guard factions that operate within Canterlot, they are expected to be the most elite soldiers with the highest training and the most discipline. The Lunar and the Solar guard are expected to defend Celestia and Luna with their lives, the safety of the princesses being their first and foremost duty. The protection of the city of Canterlot itself comes as a secondary objective, however, to defend the city is to also defend the princesses. As such, the Guard factions of Canterlot are the city's primary defenders, and serve to keep the city and its occupants safe from harm whenever harm is directed their way. In catastrophic emergencies, their primary duty is to the princesses, with the safety of the citizens and the city being secondary, considered only if the Guard still has the numbers to spare forces towards the evacuation or protection of the city. For matters of city protection, police forces and the military proper are the most typical devotees.
A Golden Light
The Solar Guard is the faction that has been around the longest. Having most in common with English knights and French chevaliers, the Solar Guard has been in existence since the Sisters first claimed diarchy over Equestria, and are notable for their honor, bravery, stoicism and dedication. They are modeled after ancient heroes, and are granted shining golden heavy armor to reflect the heroic nature of the Solar Guard. They are mares and stallions of any pony race, and their matriarch is Princess Celestia. However, since the recovery of the diarchy at the hooves of the Elements of Harmony, they are also expected to lay down their lives for Princess Luna if the situation demands it, as both diarchs are considered crucial to the survival of Equestria. The Solar Guards are the face of the Guard in Canterlot, they are the shield of the city and are expected to have training in heavy armor, swords, shields, axes, crossbows and spears. Their weaponry is short and accurate, in response to the fact that any combat at the hooves of a Solar Guard may be around civilians, and any long or clumsy weapon would potentially result in collateral damage. The Solar Guard excels in training of endurance and strength, considering their need to stoically defend the princesses and innocents in the light of day from all harm. Solar Guards may also be called upon as elite soldiers in foreign engagements if the situation arises.
A Faded Glimmer
The Night Guard is a sub-faction of the Solar Guard, and has been around since the original Lunar Dynasty was disbanded. They share training regiments and exercises with the Solar Guard, however, they are taught how to operate in the dark. Due to the evening operation of this faction, the recruitment tends to favor unicorns with the ability to cast light spells. However, as with the Solar Guard, all pony races are accepted into the ranks if they can pass the training. They are issued grey and blue armor with less plating than the Solar Guard, allowing for easier movement and more camouflage within the dark of night. Their matriarch is Princess Celestia, however, they are also expected to protect Princess Luna if the situation demands it. More so than the Solar Guard, considering they operate during evening hours when Princess Luna would be more at risk than Princess Celestia. The Night Guards are the eyes of the city, and are expected to have training in medium armor, swords, shields, maces, clubs, axes, bows and javelins. Their weaponry is varied and versatile, allowing them to function with precision and power depending on the needs of the situation, and they have little need to be worried about collateral damage when operating while most ponies are asleep. The Night Guard specializes in investigations, perception, mindfulness and the ability to adapt, considering that their realm is one that requires keen eyes and quick senses. Night Guards may also be called upon as spies or agents, if the situation arises.
A Sneaking Shadow
The Lunar Guard is a faction that had existed during the initial reign of the diarchs until the banishment of Nightmare Moon, after which point the Lunar Guard was shut down and most Lunar Guards were integrated into the Night Guard. In time, the initial period of the Lunar Guard came to be known as the Lunar Dynasty, and the Lunar Guard remained nonexistent until Princess Luna returned at the hooves of the Elements of Harmony. Having most in common with Roman centurions and Japanese samurai, they are notable for their selflessness, devotion, community, fearlessness and ferocity. The Lunar Guards are not intended to be heroes, they are agents of action, and they adapted to the general view of distrust and fear that day ponies view them with. As such, they're issued modernized Dynasty armor, purple and blue midnight armor that's incredibly light and allows for full mobility at the sacrifice of denser protection. Their matriarch is Princess Luna, and they're noted for having an incredible devotion to her. However, they are expected to lay down their lives for Princess Celestia if there's danger directed at her, and they would not hesitate to do so. Recruiting is closed to the general public, and only bat ponies are permitted to join the Lunar Guard, considering the entirely nocturnal nature of the species and the after-hours nature of the position. The Lunar Guards are the sword of the city, and are expected to have training in light armor, hoof blades, daggers, gladii, glaives and poisonous darts. Their weaponry is quick and brutal, sacrificing precision for overwhelming power and speed, and they don't concern themselves with collateral damage when they operate exclusively in the late hours when most streets and halls are empty of ponies. The Lunar Guard specializes in speed, agility and pride themselves in efficiency, considering their need to protect the city with limited moonlight hours and their sheer devotion to their craft. Lunar Guards may be called upon as saboteurs and assassins, if the situation arises.
