-Personality Stuff-
Likes:
Flyte likes to be the centre of attention, she’s not vain exactly; she just likes to feel appreciated. She loves to hear the cheers and applauding of a grateful audience. She likes going for long walks after performances and swimming in wild brooks. She enjoys visiting her tribe in Appleloosa although she finds she’s doing it less and less these days… She prefers the company of stallions and this is probably because her tribe is dominantly male. Lastly, Flyte loves being recognised by fans. Though she does get a little flustered, it pleases her immensely.
Dislikes:
Flyte greatly dislikes jeering or booing and, whilst she’ll never walk out on a performance, if it doesn’t go well she might cry for hours afterwards. She hates failing in any respect and any minor mistake will haunt her for weeks afterwards. She hates ponies that are impatient with beginners. Flyte also dislikes anypony making fun of her. She can't stand being laughed at, especially with regards to her upbringing. She is very proud of where she comes from and considers the Buffalo Camp her home.
Motivation:
Flyte adores the cheer of her audience. The idea that she can impress someone with a special talent of her own is so wonderful to her, since she was raised somewhere that cutie marks don’t exist. She loves the trapeze, and lives for that tiny, brief moment, when there’s nothing between her and falling. The thrill is what keeps her going, even at low moments in life.
Strengths:
Witch Hazel is very strong physically and mentally. She is able to discipline herself and stick to strict regimes. She’s also rather kind and patient, as shown when she is teaching rookies. She’s very friendly and only tends to be inhospitable when confronted with pushy fans. She’s also a bit of a romantic, though this does make her fussy.
Weaknesses/Flaws:
Even Flyte wouldn’t say she was without flaw. She can be a bit tempremental sometimes and will refuse to go on at all if things aren’t perfect. But she never backs out completely, just enough to give ponies a kick in the rump. She’ll save the show at the last minute, to the annoyance of everypony else. Flyte is also very inexperienced in everything outside the circus atmosphere. Put her at a posh party or a family picnic and she won’t know what to do! She’s also rather sensitive, although she tries very hard not to show it.
Fears:
Aside from every day fears such as spiders in her headdress feathers, Flyte is terrified of falling. Though she has fallen many times before, any fall reminds her that she is still not good enough. Though she maybe doesn’t know it, she is more afraid of failing. She feels that a bad performance fails her audience. Failure is her deepest fear.
Overall Persona:
Flyte is a fit, athletic pony with a diva inside her. Her roots make her humble but they often conflict with discovery of her talent making her feel special. To her, her cutie mark is something that makes her special. Even after discovering that a cutie mark was something that happened to everypony, her idea that she was special wasn’t dampened. She can get angry very quickly when faced with topics that she’s sensitive to, such as her upbringing. She hates criticism but knows how to grit her teeth and take it. Deep inside her she feels she has failed tribe by abandoning their lifestyle to join the circus, though she visits them whenever she can. She over thinks many things and struggles to get over even the smallest of mistakes. She has no plans for the future except to keep swinging on the trapeze as long as she lives. She’s proud of her talent because it’s something that a Pegasus could achieve so easily whereas she has truly worked for it. She is slightly vain due to this and gets slightly irritated when ponies don’t seem as impressed as she thinks they should. She’s also very keen to be courted by a stallion but has never managed to hold the attention of one despite her beauty and interesting traits.
History/Background:
Witch Hazel was found in a patch of medicinal herbs by a Buffalo tribe in the Mild West when she very very small. She was taken to Appleloosa but nopony recognised her or had even heard of a filly being born recently. Along the journey, a cow buffalo, Wild Thyme, and her mate, Black Hoof had grown quite attached to her. Since they had no children of their own, they adopted her into their tribe, naming her after the place they had found her; Witch Hazel.
Witch Hazel grew up happily along with the other buffalo children. She soon realised she was different and did struggle with this for a while. She began bandaging her tail down so that it imitated the little tufts that the other buffalo had on their tails. Eventually, she came to terms with her differences and accepted herself, as they had, as part of the tribe. When she was a little older, Black Hoof took her to Appleloosa to meet other ponies. She didn’t like it much and preferred to hide between her father’s legs. She failed to notice the markings on other ponies’ flanks and they soon left. It wasn’t long after this that Witch Hazel started noticing her talent for balance. She sought out higher roped, thinner bars and practiced all the time. It was simply a hobby to her.
Then, one summer morning, a circus arrived in Appleloosa. They didn’t often come to such an out of the way town, but they were stocking up on supplies. Witch Hazel had seen the caravan arrive from the camp and crept up to visit it. In the warm dusk, the performers were practicing with a young unicorn pony, trying to teach him to tightrope walk. They left him alone for a short while and Witch Hazel approached him. “Hah! I can do that!” She proclaimed with childish abandon. The unicorn looked her over with disdain, taking in her obviously buffalo-esque appearance. He challenged her, and she proceeded to walk over low hanging ropes and bars. Outraged at being outshone, the colt demanded she try the trapeze. Had any adults been around, it would never have been allowed, but Witch Hazel had never seen something so exciting. She eagerly climbed up one pedestal and grabbed the first swing, while the colt prepared the other one. They were over a net and the colt never intended to hurt her, just prove she couldn’t do it. She swung forward, her back legs gripping the swing and the colt swung his forward for her to grab. She got it! First time! Not only that, she did it gracefully! She even managed to swing back between them, returning to her pedestal. The colt was speechless and could do nothing but point, open-mouthed at her flank. When Witch Hazel noticed the clear imprint of a trapeze swing there, she panicked, galloping off before he could say anything.
Back at the camp, she sat by the stream, scrubbing mercilessly at the mark, trying to remove the evidence that she had snuck out of camp without permission. Black Hoof finally found her in tears and gladly informed that it was her cutie mark and everyone would be very proud!
It was only a few years after this, seeking further challenges, that Witch Hazel left her Tribe to “seek her fortune” as it were. She joined the first circus that she found, as they were impressed with her ability. Though she was already almost a mare, she threw herself into her training. She quickly surpassed even those who had been training since foalhood and it wasn’t long before she was performing for real audiences. She still kept her tail bandaged in her old style, but now it was to keep it out the way rather than to fit in. Witch Hazel’s talent quickly became well known and the Ringleader insisted she took a stage name. Though rather ashamed to leave her Buffalo name behind, she treasured her new career and eventually donned the name Flyte.
