-General Stuff-
Name: Nightfall
Nickname/Alias(es): Captain. Nightlight.
Race: Batpony / Lunar Pegasus
Gender: Female
Age: Young Mare
Additional Status: The young Captain of the Lunar Guard, a brutal tactician and a determined warrior, the mare is unwilling to back down or give up when something is on the line. The type of leader who would leap hoof-first into Tartarus to save one of the soldiers under her command, Nightfall isn't afraid of risking herself to protect those she's been charged with. She's fine with being scary in the eyes of others if it means she gets her job done, she's used to stares from day ponies and stiff salutes from her soldiers, but she's not made of iron. An eidetic memory provides her the means of memorizing every soldier's name and file in order to ensure an open-door policy and to make sure that her soldiers don't see her as being on a pedestal.

-Physical Stuff-
Pelt Color: Like that of a pure-breed Lunar Pegasus, Nightfall's pelt is a light ash grey color.
Mane/Tail Color and Style: Both Nightfall's mane and tail are a faded violet color. Both her mane and her tail have a spiked, disheveled quality to them. A reminiscent style of the Nightmare Moon age.
Eye Color: Nightfall's eyes are a vivid green, with cat-slit pupils.
Cutie Mark: Nightfall's cutie mark is a double-edged vertical blade, though the hilt guard is replaced by a pair of midnight colored bat wings.
Other Scars/Markings: Nightfall has a scar on her right foreleg, which is quite faded. Though it would be difficult to spot without looking for it, the scar is jagged and uneven.
Physique: Nightfall is built lightly, with less brawn then one would expect in a guard. Her figure is more sculpted for speed and agility, but with the way that she carries herself, there is more then a touch of pride. Nightfall, like most other Luna Pegasi, has elongated "fangs", which have plenty of use in intimidation purposes, and in maw-to-pelt combat, but little else.
-Social Stuff-

-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Organization, honesty, loyalty. Pride is an absolute must where NightFall is concerned. Though she prefers the solace of the night, she will gladly venture out in the day if she needs to, or if the mood so happens to strike her.
Dislikes: Failure, dishonesty. Selling out your beliefs can't happen, it is NightFall's biggest hatred, and absolutely drives her nuts. She also tends to trail off when people talk to her for long periods of time about nothing important.
Motivation: Nightfall is completely and utterly devoted to the Princess of the Night. If Luna tells her to jump, she asks how high and where to land. Nightfall's family has always been pure-breed Luna Pegasus, and has remained loyal to the dark mistress, even throughout the Nightmare Moon period (Despite not being able to contact her for generations, the ideals have always run through the family like blood).
Strengths: Nightfall is an avid flyer, though she can't claim to be the fastest or the strongest flyer in Equestria. Her talents lie instead in combat and militant leadership. Strategy is her biggest strength; exercise of the mind give her an edge over her opponents in combat or in games.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Though Nightfall is the Captain of the Luna Guard, she is by no means the best fighter, or the best flyer. Her zero tolerance for failure, and occasionally too dark or too proud attitude makes it difficult for her to make friends outside of the guard.
Fears: Nightfall, as "fearless" a leader as she may claim to be, is unbelievably terrified of clowns and spiders. To her, they might as well be the end of the world. Not that she would ever intentionally let her friends or comrades know this bit of information. Though what she fears the most, above all else, is failure in the eyes of the dark mistress. She was raised believing that Nightmare Moon would eliminate any and all failures, and as such, she feels that Princess Luna has that same feature.
Personality: Strict and straight to the point, Nightfall usually will not be content with someone dilly-dallying when there is something important to be done. She is proud of who she is and who she represents, which can be thought of as a result of her pure-breed lineage. Nightfall will *almost* never lie to her friends, and prefers to keep them well informed of what she thinks at all times. Having very little experience with small-talking in her sheltered childhood, she finds it difficult to strike up a casual conversation with anypony, though she makes a point of trying to when she gets the chance. Nightfall is very sure of herself, and believes that she can accomplish great things in life. Quick-thinking and logical, Nightfall makes for an excellent strategist, and expresses this in the way she leads and thinks.
Overall: Nightfall is a proud, intelligent and logical leader. She is utterly devoted to the Princess Luna, and will do anything that the mistress of the night tells her to. As much as she would (inwardly) like to make friends, she has a difficult time doing so, because her childhood was sheltered in a pure-breed family. Chosen as the Captain of the Luna Guard for her shrewd tactics and persistent leadership, Nightfall leads by example, and expects her brethren guards to work like clockwork in the same manner she does.
"Heroes are supposed to be admired by the public. We can always imagine what they look like; tall, white fur, gold or silver armor, flag proudly flying over their shoulder. The books always stick that image in our minds, they want the heroes to look regal and proper. Why else do you think the standard uniform for the Solar Guard is gold? They want the day guards to look like heroes straight out of the book, they think that the public is more likely to respect them if they look like that."
"Sure, they might look like they are straight out of a storybook, and they have my respect. But there's a big difference between guarding a well-lit castle and guarding the back alleys when there's no sun to guide your way. That's where we come in. The Lunar Guard; your friendly neighborhood nocturnal creatures who are more than willing to wander around without even a light spell to guide us. We don't get gold armor because we're not supposed to be the heroes from books, we're not noble and we're not regal. If the golden boys are meant to get respect, we're the ones who are meant to get fear. Do I think that's a bad thing? Not even remotely."
"I was born in the Lunar district of Canterlot, well before Princess Luna returned. We were taught that day ponies used to question why we were even allowed to stay in Canterlot, all because our ancestors gave their allegiance to Princess Luna instead of Princess Celestia. A few hundred years after Luna was banished, day ponies just began to forget that there ever was a second Princess, they forgot why they held animosity towards us. We never forgot though, we were always brought up knowing that our Princess was that of the night."
"I remember one particular tale that my mother once told me, about the Moon's Tears. A beautiful child's tale that carried me to sleep more than one day; where a mare trapped in solitude on the moon cried out the stars so that she could have friends in her exile. My brother wasn't particularly partial to that one, but we were both receptive to the stories. We really didn't have anything else to conflict with those views aside from some books and the occasional run in with the day ponies."
"I was raised in a typical house of five. There was my mother, Fire Breeze, who had been a pyrodancer with the Night Guard, dropping Unicorn fire on enemies in nighttime raids. A lovely lady, if a little bit overbearing and almost obsessed with filling our heads with tales of the Princess that was taken from us. There was my father, Flash Storm. He was a duelist in the Night Guard, probably one of the fastest non-Unicorn I've ever seen wielding a rapier."
"He was a very nice man, very suave and charismatic, I'm honestly surprised that he went with the defense forces when he seems like so much of a rogue. My twin brother was Shadow Stomp. He wanted to be a dancer when he was looking for his cutie mark, but it turns out that he was much better fitted for being an enforcer. When it turns out that swinging a hammer is your specialty, you give up wanting to be a dancer fairly quickly. Though I still catch him dancing now and then. I swear, he might be half turkey."
"Then there was my older sister, Stoic Thought. She was an active one, I'll give her that. Strong, fast, smart, everything you need to be a Guard. But she was never really into that sort of stuff, not even when I was a kid. She got a Psi as her cutie mark, it baffled me when I was young, but I got it when I was older. She's good with pony's brains and their thoughts, at getting into their heads and helping straighten things out. Wound up getting a doctorate in psychology and moving to Manehattan."
"Lunar Pegasi have an entire community in the Lunar District of Canterlot. There are shops, a school, a cinema and a music theater, even a night club. Though, the night club actually operated during daylight hours, and it irritated the day ponies to no end. What can we say? The night is our day, and the day is our night, we're going to be having lunch at midnight, not partying. But I digress. Despite the bustling community, most Lunar Pegasi train to become a Night Guard from an early age. We call it a tradition; all of our ancestors were proud warriors before Princess Luna was banished. Most of our families still had the armor of our ancestors as a form of familial honor and pride."
"Our standard education when growing up included mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy, history (Especially the history of the Lunar Pegasi), battlefield tactics, physical education (Which primarily focused on martial combat), team building exercises, and our favorite school competitions were always mock battle royales and capture-the-flag. I had a particular interest in battlefield tactics, but with my eidetic memory, I just wound up memorizing all the tactics that were shown in our books and then I got bored. My initial plan was to go into further education to join the ranks of military strategy composition, but I decided to join the Night Guard straight out of schoool."
"Training was a breeze for me, but that's not saying much. Training for the Night Guard, and by extension the Royal Guard, isn't terribly intensive for a race that includes combat training as part of grade school. Needless to say, I was accepted into the Night Guard. It wasn't difficult work, I spent most of it patrolling the streets at night, going on the patrols that the day ponies didn't like going on. It was only about a year that we did that before Princess Luna returned and was restored to her former glory by Princess Celestia and the Elements of Harmony. I remember I was sleeping through the day whenever one of the Lunar Pegasi who was out partying came knocking on our door at about noon, yelling that Princess Luna was back and would be returning from Ponyville that night."
"I was still groggy from sleep and the sun stung my eyes, but I remember rushing from house to house gathering every Lunar Pegasus who was in the Night Guard and telling them to get their family's ceremonial armor and meet me in the Great Hall early that evening. I'm not sure what I was trying to do, or where I got the idea. It seemed like it was a good idea at the time, that it was the right thing to do. While everyone was getting their armor out of their atriums, I went to the local historian. He was a grizzled old stallion, but he knew the most about our culture and had the widest collection of items relating to the historic Lunar dynasty. I told him the situation and asked if we could borrow the Lunar crest tapestries and the traditional Lunar dynasty spears, to which he was more than happy to do. Then I got in my many times great great grandmother's armor, slung the bag of spears and tapestries over my back and booked it for the castle."
"It took about an hour to hang the tapestries to the spears properly, hang a few tapestries on the walls, get positioned properly and get ready, but we managed. We stood on either side of the carpet in the great hall in our ancient armor and with our spears pointed to the ceiling for about three hours, waiting for our lost Princess to return to us. When the doors to the Great Hall finally opened, our spears snapped to attention to create a canopy of blue steel and Lunar tapestries that would have made any patriot weep in joy. There we were, a full fifty Lunar Pegasi, twenty five on either side, dressed up as if we were in the Lunar dynasty all over again, ready to greet our Princess as if she had never left our side."
"I can't claim to ever know what went through her head when she saw us. I like to think that she was happy with what she saw, that we warmed her heart and made her feel welcomed. Maybe we just added to her regret, but I think she was happy. Whatever she thought, though, she asked who was the one responsible for the welcome. I stepped forward, spear as straight as if it were keeping the castle from collapsing on top of me, and told her that it was me. She told me she saw something in me, but never told me anything more detailed. Princesses just love to keep you guessing. And then she asked if I'd like to be the Captain for the newly reinstated Lunar Guard, and the rest is history."
"Now, the Lunar Guard is a force to be feared. I've shaped the training regiment to be difficult for even the graduates of the Lunar Pegasus community, I run the Guard like a well-oiled clock. We were commissioned new armor, new weapons, new banners and even a new barracks, all with a modern feel of Lunar dynasty to them. But we're not the Lunar dynasty any more, we don't sing the amplexus while we march, and we're not seen as an army of traitors to the general public. We may be feared, but we're noble, we keep you safe while you sleep, we protect you from threats you never knew existed, and we never ask for thanks. We do it because it's what we were born to do, because we're willing to lay down our lives so that our Princesses don't have to."
"So you ask me what it means to be a Lunar Guard? It doesn't mean being big, fast, tough or strong. It doesn't mean being mean or patriotic. It means being selfless, and being prepared to better yourself so that Equestria will never fall. The Royal Guard is the shield of Equestria, and we are it's sword. Am I jealous of the Royal Guard? No. No, I am quite happy here. We become the scariest things in the shadows so that you don't have to be afraid of the dark."
