Emerald Quill was born and raised in a far away town where things are still done the old-fashioned way; fences are made of stone, crops are picked without magic or machines and tea is never served without milk and honey. His family were pretty much the only unicorns anyone there had ever known and there were very few visitors. All in all, Quill had a very quiet childhood. Too quiet. Some would even say boring.
To stave off boredom, Quill turned to making trouble for other ponies. He would pull pranks and scare local livestock as well as break into one of the local farmer's stores and drink as much carrot juice as he could before getting caught and running as fast as his legs could carry him. As much as they tried, it seemed that the town couldn't find a way to deal with the little rascal in their midst until one day when he finally got caught by the farmer he had been stealing from.
The town decided to punish the little colt by making him clean the library. Over time, Quill actually began to read the books he had been spending so much time organizing and discovered a love for poetry that would remain with him for the rest of his life (and get him his cutie mark). He started causing less trouble and started focusing more on creative writing.
By the time he had grown into a stallion, Quill felt he had outgrown his home as well, so he packed his things and left. He had a few adventures in his travels and wrote them down as best as he could remember. Eventually, his travels brought him to Ponyville and from the looks of it, he may just settle down here for a while.
