-Personality Stuff-
Likes: Writing, reading, staring off into space, the classic dark cloak/sunglasses combo, singing (although he can't actually sing), a twist ending he can't predict, cute animals, a cool breeze.
Dislikes: Parties, crowded areas, loud noises, injustices; things that don't make sense (especially other ponies); writer's block; hot summer days.
Motivation: To write a book which will be remembered forever!
Strengths: He's a very good writer; he's witty; he's kind; and although he'll sigh, he is always willing to assist anypony in need of aid.
Weaknesses/Flaws: He's too proud for his own good; he's antisocial to the point of misanthropy; he can be quite rude and he's very stubborn.
Fears: Losing his intellectual drive, spiders, heights.
Overall Persona: Ink Scrawl is a nice pony, in his own way- he can be kind and generous, and he knows when something is wrong. But he finds it very hard to interact with other ponies. It's not that he's shy; indeed, he's very self-confident. He just sees everything the way it is in a story- simple, formulaic, even predictable, if you know your stuff. The love interest leaves her true love, but don't worry, he'll burst in on her wedding and they'll get back together. But ponies don't work that way in real life, and that's an issue for Ink Scrawl. He's terrible at picking up social cues. If there's a "line", odds are he'll cross it. His self-confidence can also come across as arrogance to other ponies. He'll speak up for what's right, even when it's probably best to just put up with it. To put it his way, "it's the principle of the matter!" And, of course, he likes to point out flaws and inefficiencies in everything. In short, you'll want to hit him in the face if you interact with him for too long.
In his travels, he's adopted the identity of his character Black Cape, the detective. Black Cape shares Ink's sarcasm, but Cape's far more suave and charming (not to mention athletic). Ink has attempted to adopt Cape's personality (and even his namesake black cape), with limited success. He may talk like he knows what he's doing, but in the real world, a mystery writer's knowledge isn't very helpful.
History: Ink Scrawl was born in Canterlot to two loving parents, Quota and Loose Nail. They weren't the most well-off family in Canterlot, and Ink didn't really fit in with his better-off classmates, but he had a happy and fairly comfortable childhood.
As a foal Ink showed an affinity for the pen, but it never developed very far. Seeking to find his true talent, he went to the library and accidentally stole a book of compiled classics. It proved to be all the inspiration he needed; the next few days were a period of frantic scribbling, some time during which he earned his cutie mark.
He moved to Ponyville to escape the crowds and wrote many adventure and mystery novels. His favorite, although not the most famous of his works, was the Black Cape series, about a sauve, cynical detective. His books weren't great literature, but they made him a comfortable living.
However, he eventually grew dissatisfied with his life and realized that he wanted to write something personal and worthwhile. He decided to travel the width and breadth of Equestria, under the alias of one of his favorite character: Black Cape.
Unfortunately, Ink still has a long way to go before he gains any great writing skill, so he'll be travelling for quite a while.
