-Personality Stuff-
Likes:
Flying (particularly on her mail runs), the early morning, writing poetry, writing stories, relaxing, reciting, siting on a cloud and watching the world go by.
Dislikes:
Being grounded, "boneheaded athletes", ponies who don't like poetry, heavy winds.
Motivation:
To somehow translate the beauty of the world into a single poem.
Strengths:
She's honorable, kind, and dependable. She's a great poet, and not too shabby a flyer either. She is also unique, and doesn't like conforming to other ponies' standards. (Whether that's good or bad is your opinion.)
Weaknesses/Flaws:
She can be stubborn and proud. She has, as her name suggests, a fiery temper and can be very impulsive and quick to act without thinking. She's a free thinker, and woe betide anyone who makes fun of her.
Fears:
She has a crippling fear of losing her ability to think and write. It's irrational, but it scares her all the same. She is also afraid of storms and blizzards, naturally.
Overall Persona:
Dawnfire lives outside of Cloudsdale in a small cloud house. She works as a mail pony, which provides inspiration for her poem. She is surprisingly bookish, but don't call her an "egghead". She spends most of her free time reading classics or staring out the window and writing poetry.
She doesn't have that many friends, but that's alright. She is strong, loyal, independent, and dependable. She can be a bit skeptical of strangers, and is frequently impulsive and quick-tempered, but she's worth befriending. Once she's in your corner, she'll fight for you to the end.
Some ponies view her as weird, but she prefers to think of it as "unique". She can indeed be a bit eccentric, but she is an artist, after all. She hates trying to fit in, and will often dress oddly just to stick out.
History:
Dawnfire's story begins at dawn, several years ago. Snow Breeze, a meteorologist at the Cloudsdale Weather Factory, has come to Stalliongard to do a damage report. That night, a large blizzard had been released accidentally from the Weather Factory, catching many ponies unawares and blanketing Equestria in snow. There don't appear to be any serious injuries, but it's done a good deal of structural damage.
Snow Breeze has just finished his report and is leaving town when he spies something peculiar in the snow below. It looks, oddly enough, like a fire! Unable to make it out in the weak dawn light, Snow Breeze flies in and lands to examine it more closely.
What he sees is . . . peculiar. The "fire" turns out to be an orange and red mane. But ther doesn't seem to be anypony attached to the mane. It just float there eerily. Could it be- a GHOST?
Snow Breeze is not the most superstitious of ponies, but he approaches carefully. Then he suddenly realizes what his "ghost" is: a light blue pony, whose pelt was nearly invisible against the snow. She is a very young pegasus filly, wearing the tatters of a fancy ballgown, and she is shivering. She looks at Snow Breeze with big, sad eyes, and asks, "Daddy?"
Snow Breeze's heart melts, and he gathers up the pony and cradles her close to him until she warms up. Then he takes "Ghost" back into town, assuming that she had gotten trapped by the storm
However, nopony in Stalliongrad recognizes her. It seems impossible, but Ghost must have been blown to Stalliongrad by the storm.
Snow Breeze takes her back to Cloudsdale, and tries to find Ghost's parents. Ghost appears to know nothing: she is very young, and must have lost her memory in the storm.
However, in his heart of hearts, Snow Breeze doesn't want to find her parents: he wants to raise her himself, for he loves the little filly. When at last the search turns up nothing, Snow Breeze is both dismayed and gladdened. He adopts Ghost himself, and gives her the official name of Dawnfire.Dawnfire has a peaceful childhood in Cloudsdale. She isn't the fastest flyer, but she does all right in flight camp. She makes a few friends in school. Her father frequently takes her with him when he travels around Equestria on business, which she enjoys.
Dawn also has a voracious appetite for reading. She will read anything she gets her hands on, and she starts to do very well in school. She starts to cherish trips to Canterlot, because that means she can spend the day in the stacks of the public section of the Canterlot Archives.
However, she isn't a nerd: she still has a lot of fun flying. She gets into trouble for fighting colts who call her an "egghead".
She is bereft of a cutie mark even after nearly everyone else in her class is, however, no pony's dumb enough to call her a "blank flank".
Dawn spends a lot of her time with her "cousin" Nightingale. Gale is a very free-willed, proud, and stubborn, not unlike Dawn, but even more so. She is a mature pony who spends most of her days racing. Dawn looks up to Gale, and tries to imitate her, for better and worse.
As Dawn approaches maturity, she takes a job as a messenger pony to get some spending money. This job entails long, lonely flights, often done at dawn so she can still get to school on time. However, Dawn relishes these flight, and the beauty of her perspective on the early-morning Equestrian countryside.
In an attempt to capture the beauty she sees, Dawn begins writing poetry. She has a good deal of talent, which improves when she starts studying classic poets. Some of her beset works are even published in the Cloudsdale newspaper.
Dawn asks if she can read a poem at her class's graduation ceremony. Her teacher approves, and Dawn pens a poem describing the need for independence and free spirit in everyone, praising her friend Nightingale as a good example.
Nightingale is not happy when she hears about Dawn's plan. She had overlooked Dawn's bookishness for many years, but this is crossing the line. It would hurt her "image" to be mentioned in a poem.
Dawn goes to show Gale her poem, only for Gale to tell her not to recite it. A fight breaks out, with both of them eventually vowing never to talk to the other again. Snow Breeze tries to mediate, but both ponies are too stubborn to back down. Dawn tears up the poem and storms off in a huff.
With the graduation looming, Dawn tries to write another poem, but can't find any inspiration. She flies to Canterlot to look at some classic poems, but is still at a loss. At last, tired and frustrated, she falls asleep at a table, with no poem and the graduation the next day.
Back in Cloudsdale, Gale pieces together the poem Dawn tore up and is touched by what she reads. She realizes that she has been too harsh on Dawn.
Dawn awakens just before dawn the next day. Panicking, she takes off for Cloudsdale at full speed, knowing that she can't miss the graduation, even without a poem. But here, flying over Equestria with dawn at her back, she finds inner peace and inspiration.
Arriving at the graduation with moments to spare, Dawn proudly recites a new poem entitled "Ode to Dawn", in which she summarizes her hopes, dreams, fears, and shortcomings.
Afterward, Dawn and Gale reunite and Gale apologizes to Dawn, adding that Dawns' poems are some of the most beautiful things she'd ever heard. Thrilled, Dawn realizes she has gained her cutie mark.
Dawn sometimes wonders about her past. She barely remembers anything, just an image of her parents tucking her in to bed. She loves Snow Breeze, and considers him her father, but curiosity still nags at her. What if she's an heiress? Or what if she's a lost princess? Although she discounts these ideas, she is still curious.
(There! I redid it, more or less.)
