Dislikes: Anarchy, excessively sweet foods, losing his temper, flying, falling, uncertainty
Motivation: Before his injury, Aegis found joy and fulfillment in his duty. It was all he needed but now that he's been placed on injured leave he's at a bit of a loss. His two options are either to get better and return to duty or find a better purpose in Ponyville. He's not even 100% certain which he'd rather have...
Strengths: Calm under pressure, strong determination, leadership, physical strength and endurance, well-mannered, modest.
Weaknesses/Flaws: Stubbornness, unable to fly due to injury and stress, difficulty adjusting to life outside the Royal Guard, lack of social skills, quick-tempered, reclusive.
Fears: Heights, failing in his duties, letting his comrades down, losing his nerve
Overall Persona:
At first glance, Aegis might seem like every other member of the Royal Guard - the proud, powerful stance; the stoic, unwavering gaze; the spotless white mane; the authoritative, baritone voice. And it's true that Aegis has always done his best to carry with him the virtues of the Royal Guard but like any pony there are always multiple sides to him. Aegis the Royal is but one part of him, albeit a very large, significant part of him, but nonetheless one cannot understand him completely by just seeing the guard.
Aegis has always been the 'speak softly, carry a big stick' kind of pony. He'd rather let his actions do the talking, which is great in the Guard...but not so great with the rest of the world. Socially, he's pretty quiet and has trouble finding common ground with the average pony. If left to his own devices, he'd rather spend his time in solitude than hanging around with other ponies. If one can keep him in a conversation, however, he's very well-mannered and polite if a bit on the reclusive side. At times he can be a bit blunt in his honesty and his sense of humour can be a bit dry but while Aegis might not necessarily be the friendliest, he's loyal and faithful to anyone who needs it - he is a Royal Guard after all.
At present time, an injury during a training exercise has grounded Aegis indefinitely. In order to facilitate his recovery, his superiors suggested that he find some place quieter to recuperate. Aegis figured being some place a bit closer to terra firma would probably help him in the long run, for you see...Aegis biggest obstacle in his road to recovery is dealing his pathological fear of heights. Yes...a weird thing for a pegasus to possess but those are the facts. Back in the guard, when he was a job or duty to focus his mind, he could keep that fear suppressed. But now those loci of focus are gone and every time he even thinks of about flying he can become paralyzed with fear. The only thing he fears worse than heights is other ponies finding out about it. Aegis is far more fearful than he lets on - sheer will and determination are generally what's needed to keep himself from completely flipping out but also the even greater fear of what would happen if he lost his nerve in front of other ponies. At least on injured leave he won't have to worry about that too much...he hopes...
Background:
Aegis Hammerhoof originally hails from Fillydelphia where his family runs a lumber mill and carpentry service. Though he had always dreamed of following in his great-grandfather's hoofsteps and joining the Royal Guard, his practical-minded side had always accepted the inevitability of staying with his family and working at the mill. It's not as though he disliked the mill or being with his family, quite the contrary in fact, it's just that Aegis yearned for something more - a desire in his heart that he could never quite put into words. It wasn't until the day that he earned his cutie mark, standing up against some bullies at school, that he realized that his dream was more than just that - it was his destiny.
As soon as he was old enough, Aegis traveled to Canterlot in order to join the Royal Guard. Despite having a lifelong fear of heights, his will and determination allowed him to keep his fears suppressed and he was able to earn his way into their ranks. It was in the Royal Guard that Aegis truly found his calling - the ordered, disciplined lifestyle suited him perfectly and for the first time in his life, he felt fulfilled with a sense of belonging.
And he would have been content with an unassuming career in the Guard, an ordeal with a dragon ensured that 'unassuming' was the last thing he'd have. A young, unruly dragon had taken up residence in the forests near Fillydelphia and Aegis along with a team of Royal Guards were dispatched to find a resolution to the situation. Unfortunately, negotiations broke down and the Guards had to resort to force to pacify the dragon. However, a handful of pegasi weren't exactly a match for a dragon, even a young one. But just when things looked bleak, a pegasus broke rank...charging headlong at the dragon and delivering the mother of all headbutts, subduing the beast long enough for the other Guards to secure and talk sense into the dragon. That pegasus, of course, was Aegis, whose courage and selflessness were commended when he finally regained consciousness. Aegis, though, didn't exactly have the heart to tell them the truth - that his 'breaking rank' was actually him completely flipping out and trying to run for safety and that his 'mother of all headbutts' was entirely an accident.
The incident left Aegis with a nasty scar on his head, the nickname 'Hardhead', and a reputation that he wasn't entirely comfortable with. His attempts to dismiss praise only wound up with him being praised even more for his modesty.
As of late, Aegis has been temporarily grounded as a result of a mid-air collision during a training exercise. Quick thinking (or frantic desperation depending on who you ask) on Aegis managed to avert a serious disaster but left him with a badly injured left wing. He tried his best to act disappointed but in truth he was kind of relieved to be able to take some time away from work. Or at least that's what his first thoughts were...but it turned out that work was the only thing keeping his nerves in order. Without the rigidity and structure, his mind began to fray at the seams until even looking out a window made him nervous. Aegis realized his pathological fear of heights was making a huge come-back and if he didn't get it in order, he'd be kicked out of the Guard and be the laughing stock of the whole kingdom.
So to aid in his recover, Aegis has been sent away to somewhere more tranquil. He figured Ponyville would be sufficient - he used to visit family there as a foal and it was close to Canterlot to remind him of where he'd eventually want to go back to.
