Fears: Meeting his parents, losing Star to anything
Overall Persona: Iris and his brother, Compass Star, were both left in an orphanage in Canterlot at a very young age. Iris only had vague memories of the day he arrived there; it was sunny, he didn't see any of his friends and was stuck in a room with his brother. He remembered nothing of his parents and really didn't care to. So, he assigned himself the task of raising his little brother while only being 2 years older himself.
An interesting ability came with his decision; the ability to read other ponies. He became so very fluent in body language, nonvocal cues, and vocal inflections, that some ponies thought he could read minds. Once, while drawing as a pastime, he caught one of the older ponies stealing from the headmaster just by a slight ear twitch the elder didn't realize he had. Nopony ever acted up around him for fear of being caught. That was when he got his cutie mark, and as a side result, most ponies (including the adults) left him alone, giving him a rather distinct area around him that nopony wanted to enter. His brother never mistrusted him, of course, but he was rarely around anyway.
Iris delved deeper into his penciling art, using it as an outlet of frustration and confusion over why ponies acted the way they did. Because of all the time he spent alone, he improved dramatically in both his art and mind, and by the time he was a young stallion he had already garnered fame in a wide area of the city, and even got commissions from some nobility for artistic projects. It came as an opportunity; he had them coming in at such a rate that he could afford to take care of Star (Nopony yet had adopted them - Star had several offers but neither brother would go without the other). Reluctant to see them go, the headmaster of the orphanage released them in their own care, and Iris found his own apartment with a gorgeous view of the valley.
Star, of course, was destined for greater things, and left almost immediately, but Iris stayed behind in the city, hoping to find some shade of fulfillment within the bounds of Canterlot.
