It was a nice, sunny day in both Cloudsdale and in Ponyville and Nook would know since she had been in and out of both places all day. Indeed she had been pretty busy that day with both her job as a lost and founder and as a local hero. It was difficult and stressful wearing two hats, but not downright impossible. Plus she loved her work. Both jobs were so satisfying that it made whatever stress it created worth it. At least in her mind anyway. Anypony else would probably just quit being a hero and stick with the job that pays. But not Nook. She couldn't, wouldn't do that.
But yes all day she had been juggling her civilian work and her hero work just as she did most everyday. It wasn't easy and keeping her hero identity a secret was surprisingly an even bigger challenge. What, with all the nosy reporters out there, plus her own ego getting in the way of things, it truly is a miracle her secret identity hasn't been exposed yet to all of Equestria. Earlier that day, she had returned several lost items to their rightful owners when they stopped by her shop to pick them up. Afterwards, she put on her purple costume and stopped a robbery and saved a pony from getting creamed from an out of control speeding carriage. Overall, it's been a pretty good day. For her though this would be considered a slow day. Indeed, she would have normally had more jobs in one day than this, but hey she wasn't complaining or was she? While she certainly did not mind breaks and slow days, she would rather be out there doing something and being useful than just sitting around boredly in her shop all day wishing for something to happen. Something, anything that would be big enough to get her out of her Ponyville Lost and Found shop.
As luck would have it, Fate chose that precise moment to strike with a ton of commotion coming from just outside her humble shop. Nook who honestly was seconds away from dozing off at her counter leaped several feet into the air at the very loud noise coming from just outside her shop and there in the air she stayed, flapping her wings. "I'm up! I'm up! I mean that is to say, I so wasn't sleeping! I would never sleep on the job!" she shouted in her thick Haystralian accent though nopony heard her. It took the pink and blue pegasus a few seconds to realize that she was lucky. This time nopony caught her red-hoofed sleeping on the job. After she relaxed, she sighed in relief.
Still, she wondered what all the hubub was going on outside her shop, so giving into her curiosity she poked her head out the window just in time to spot a speeding Earth pony running off with what appeared to be a bagful of groceries. She initially thought nothing of it. After all, it just looked like a pony being in a big fire hurry to get his groceries home. Nothing too unusual there. That was until she heard somepony shout, "THIEF! COME BACK HERE WITH MY FRUIT! PLEASE, WON'T SOMEPONY HELP ME?! THAT ORANGE STALLION HAS STOLEN MY FRUIT!" That was really all Nook needed to hear.
Nook quickly changed into her Darkwing Night costume; which covered her entirely except for her mane, tail and wings. She sadly could not hide those. Her costume was a sort of dark purple with a dark grey fedora and black cape.
She then rushed out of her shop and spotting the shouting pony, Darkwing Night hurried over to her. "No worries citizen for I will stop that fruit pilfering parasite posthaste," she confidently reassured striking a heroic pose. The fruit stand owner just looked at her in disbelief. "Look sweetie I am sure you are perfectly capable of handling yourself, but this is a dangerous thief. I'm pretty sure he is the one behind all the thefts that have been going on here in Ponyville lately. No offense, but this is a bit of out of your league," the fruit stand owner warned in a most patronizing tone. Darkwing was so distracted by the fruit stand owner's condescending tone that she almost didn't hear her mention that her thief could possibly be responsible for the string of thefts occurring in the area. Eye twitching in frustration, Darkwing gritted her teeth in irritation. If nothing else, Darkwing hated it whenever somepony called her 'sweetie' or spoke to her as though she were a mere filly. It was just downright degrading! It was almost as bad as being called a costumed clown; which admittedly she has been numerous times before. Insulted, Darkwing glared at the fruit stand owner and hovered a few feet off the ground. "Sweetie? Sweetie? Why, I oughta... Wait, hold on a sec! Did you just say, that your bushranger could very well be the one behind the recent string of thefts that's been going on around here lately?" she inquired still in mid-hover. The fruit stand owner simply nodded. "I did. Why do you ask? Do you know something about this?" the fruit stand owner asked staring the costumed pegasus down with suspicion. Chuckling softly, Darkwing just admired one of her hooves. "Oh I might know a little certain something about that, but don't you worry your pretty little head about it for I am the terror that flaps in the night," Darkwing began as she tried to act all mysterious with her cape, "I am the rain that rains on the parade of drongo bushrangers! I am Darkwing Night! And as Celestia as my witness I, Darkwing shall single-hoofedly capture the bushranger, bring him to justice, and recover your stolen fruit as well as anything else he might have gotten his dirty hooves on!"
And before the fruit stand owner could say anything more, Darkwing took off into the sky with the hopes of spotting the thief. As she flew she could not believe her luck! It admittedly had been awhile since she found herself on an actual case though she could not help, but wonder why she did not hear about this thief before. She supposed since she mostly resided in Cloudsdale that could be part of the reason. But no, that wasn't a good enough reason since she still ran her Ponyville shop on every other day, so surely she would have heard something about it before now especially given her unique clairvoyance ability. Hm, then again perhaps she did hear something about it after all. She had been getting quite a few costumers lately. Not as many as she would have liked since days still felt slow, but still. Some of her customers swore that their missing items had been stolen right from their own homes or shops, but at the time Nook just thought they were exaggerating or being over dramatic. Now with this speedy thief on the loose, she wasn't so sure. Already she managed to find some of the missing items and returned them to their rightful owners who were most grateful to her. But, she didn't find all just yet nor did she see the thief in any of her visions. Still, she felt certain that once she finds the thief then she will in turn locate the stolen items. Now that she had a plan forming in her mind, all that remained was getting back on the thief's trail and then there was the little matter of capturing him. Darkwing realized that there was very little chance of him surrendering and very few ponies were into physical violence. But Darkwing was different... She didn't mind fighting. In fact, she rather enjoys it. Ever since she was just a little filly she learned to fight. So upon capturing him she had to be wary of innocent civilians that may be around, something she was certain that the thief cared nothing about!
As she continued her search for the fruit thief, Darkwing kept her eyes glued on the ground below while still being able to pay attention to where she was flying. Doing so was an important and useful skill that she learned way back. Without that skill she would have likely crashed into several other pegasi and birds by now.
Then as luck would have it she soon spotted the speeding Earth pony. He had an orange coat with a dark brown mane and tail. For some weird reason he wore a bright red scarf around his neck; which to the costumed heroine practically screamed, 'here I am! Capture me!' Darkwing recognized the fleeing thief straight away! Not wanting him to escape, Darkwing positioned herself behind some clouds, so he wouldn't spot her and pulling out one of her heavy duty wooden boomerangs, she took aim and skillfully threw it at the thieving stallion. The wooden boomerang struck one of his back legs causing him to fall flat on his face and the stolen fruit to spill out of his saddlebag. The thief who did not see that one coming was very angry. "Hey, what gives? Who dares...?" the thief angrily demanded as he struggled to gather up the spilled fruit.
Grinning behind her mask, Darkwing saw this as the perfect opportunity to reveal herself to the thief. 'It's showtime,' she thought to herself as she tossed down some smoke bombs causing the thief to gag. "I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the rain on your parade! I am...Darkwing Night," she dramatically announced as she dropped down from the sky landing behind the coughing stallion. As the smoke cleared, the thief stopped coughing and was now able to see the masked pegasus before him. Annoyed he just glared. "So you're the interfering little hero who's been taking back what I worked so hard to steal?" he asked grinning a sickly grin as he stepped closer to Darkwing. But Darkwing was unafraid and just firmly stood her ground looking the stallion straight in the eye. "Well no duh you useless drongo bushranger! You know very well that stealing is frowned upon," the brave pegasus snarled in her thick Haystralian accent. Sadly, the stallion had no idea what those Haystralian terms meant and saw it as Darkwing flirting with him. Smiling he sprayed on some cologne. "Well, well now I had no idea I had hero types crushing on me. You really didn't need to go through all of this trouble just to impress me! Although, I must admit I don't impress easily. But you dressing up and playing hero just so you could get with me, definite valiant effort I must say! This is definitely my lucky day! So what say you rope me, take me into custody and then..." Delusional, he then whispered the rest into her ear causing the masked heroine to turn a bright red underneath her mask. This was definitely one of those times she was happy to have a mask on. She really could not believe just how completely and utterly delusional and vain this guy was! Fuming, Darkwing just pushed the crazy stallion away from her. "Sorry, but I make it a prerogative not to date drongos and bushrangers! Annnnd sadly for you, you're both mate! Oh and just so you know for future reference, drongo means stupid and bushranger means criminal! And now you are coming with me because as a hero, it is my job to keep Equestria safe from low life criminals such as yourself," she snarled as she backed him up against a tree.
His ears had drooped some at this revelation. "Oh wow this is um well awkward. So no second date, I take it?" he asked looking almost hopeful. Darkwing had to laugh at that. Boy was this guy ever thick! "Ha, not even close!" The look on the stallion's disappointed face was just enough to convince Darkwing to be a little nicer. She cleared her throat. "Look, why don't you tell me why you are running all over Ponyville stealing stuff? It just isn't right!" she asked in a softer tone all the while resisting the urge to strangle him. At that the stallion just grinned slyly. "Oh well, I don't mind if I do sweetheart. You see, the reason behind all of my thieving ways is simple. I'm hungry and I simply don't have the bits for food and so I steal what I need to survive. Simple, right? Kind of makes you regret laughing at me earlier and calling me dumb, doesn't it? Don't worry. I forgive you. You can just date me and we'll be even," he arrogantly stated. Silently seething in anger, Darkwing took a couple of breaths to calm herself down. "Simple, riiiiight. Although, that doesn't explain why you are also stealing expensive things such as gem stone earrings from wealthy ponies," the masked pegasus pointed out. "Oh no I can explain that too. You see I am merely stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. It is a difficult and noble task often misunderstood by today's society! Hey, you see you and I we have a lot in common! We're both misunderstood heroes trying to do our part to help out." At this, Darkwing just sort of rolled her eyes! "Oh wow, did you just come up with that right now?" The stallion looking pretty impressed with himself just proudly nodded. "I did. You should totally be impressed by me! I am so awesome!" "Uh, how about no? And for the record how am I a misunderstood hero? Everypony already knows that I am trying to fight for the betterment of Equestria." "Oh well you see, I have heard a few things about you Darkwing Night from other ponies and not all of it positive. They seem to think you a joke, a costumed clown," the thief explained. "WHAT!? I AM NOT A CLOWN! I AM A HERO FOR CELESTIA'S SAKE! And I'll prove it by taking you in! You are so not a noble thief and even if you were, it wouldn't matter. In my eyes and in that of most ponies, taking things that don't belong to you without permission is still stealing even with good intent involved. I don't know what makes you think it's okay to do cause it so isn't."
And without any warning she roped him. After making sure he was secured, Darkwing stroke a heroic pose with the hopes that somepony had witnessed her single-hoofedly taking the vain, arrogant thief down. In fact, she was so confident that somepony saw that she readied her quill to sign autographs.
ooc: Forgot to ask, did you want their meeting to be just between them or do you want the thread to be opened? I'm cool either way. Also I hope you liked the starter. And here is how she looks in her costume:
