Star Serenade sighed, walking through the marketplace, his stomach growling at him as he passed by a number of food vendors, each one more appetizing than the last. Star hadn't had a bite to eat in what felt like weeks, and his skinny belly was proof of this. But this didn't depress the dark green pegasi, as he would surely find something to eat sooner or later.
Star sat down at the center of the marketplace, watching the other ponies exchange their bits for food and other handy appliances, and couldn't help but hum a little tune to himself, remembering how his grandmother had sang him this song. She sang it when she was out of luck one winter many years ago, and, after singing her sad little song, a stranger had decided to give her a few bits, to help ease her suffering. Sure, the times had surely changed, but it wasn't like Star Serenade had very many options, now did he?
Star took a deep breath, and then began to sang a sad little song from years long past.
"Once I lived the life of a millionaire
Spending my money, I didn't care
I carried my friends out for a good time
Bying bootleg cider, saltlicks and wine
Then I began to fall so low
I didn't have a friend, and no place to go
So if I ever get my hand on a bit again
I'm gonna hold on to it till every things all green
Nobody knows you when you down and out
In my pocket not one bi~t
And my friends they don't care a bit
But If I ever get on my hooves again
Then I'll meet my long lost friend
It's mighty strange, without a doubt
Nobody knows you when you down and out
I mean when you down and out
Mmmmmmmm.... when you're down and out
Mmmmmmmm... not one bi~t
And my friends they don't care a bit
Mmmmmmmm... Well I felt so low
Nobody wants me round their door
Mmmmmmmm... Without a doubt,
No mare can use you when your down and out
I mean when your down and out~"
Star looked around to see if any of the ponies were paying attention to him, but there were only a few odd glances here and there, and none of the ponies who looked at him seemed all that willing to help. Star Serenade sighed, sitting down in the dirt with a disappointed look on his face.
'I guess things have changed since then, grandma...' The green pegasi thought, absentmindedly digging at the ground as he became lost in his thoughts.
