Augen Horns, the foreign priest
"I'm a goat, and I don't mean to gloat!"
Augen was born in Cabraska, a province in the goat-inhabited land of Hercinia. There, he studied theology as an acolyte in a chapel. Eventually a mysterious evil arose in Cabraska, and Augen was one among a large group of clergymen and hunters sent to deal with it. Eventually they managed to seal the beast in stone, but when they returned Augen decided to leave Cabraska, as he felt his beliefs were at a clash with the established dogma. He began travelling Hercinia, sharing religious beliefs and performing odd jobs. This attracted mistrust from theocratic establishments, who eventually used their influence to help get Augen imprisoned on charges of consorting with criminals.
Augen's stay in Ramsterdam Capital Prison was brief. As luck would have it, Prime Minister Walliser had taken concern over the dystopic conditions of Hercinia. He had heard of a land called Equestria, a thriving utopia, and he became obsessed with learning about this distant land. He gathered a large group of goats, most of whom were prisoners tempted by release and others being volunteers, and sent them on a pilgrimage to Equestria with one task: find the meaning of life. Among the released prisoners was Augen, who felt that this task might allow him some insight into the divine.
The wilderness between Hercinia and Equestria was treacherous, and as they traveled more and more pilgrims either turned tail or lost their lives. Eventually the goats came across a bridge, only to find it to be inhabitted by a vicious troll. Being one of the few remaining pilgrims with any experience dealing with monsters, Augen battled the troll. In the process, however, the bridge was destroyed. As it collapsed into the chasm below it took Augen and the troll down with it. Augen managed to survive, the troll having broken his fall. He awoke far downstream, lost even deeper in the wilderness.
After almost a year, Augen made his way into Equestria. Trekking through the nearby mountains, Augen rolled into a town called "Ponyville". As a foreigner, Augen felt very out of place and nervous about interacting with the inhabitants, who seemed strange and hectic to the wandering goat. Of course there was no escaping society and Augen began living awkwardly among the ponyfolk, many of whom had not seen his kind.
At first, Augen thought getting used to the locals was his only issue... Until he came to realize that he was a broke, homeless vagrant with no food and no means of income. Fortunately, the kindness of one of the ponies helped him to survive long enough to at least figure out how to live as a bum until he could get back on track.
After having spent almost a month in Equestria, Augen finally got around to trying to start a business. However, as he tried to garner the necessary materials he was confronted by another goat from the pilgrimage, who had apparently made it safely to Equestria. This other goat, Tanzerin, allowed Augen into her workplace to discuss what had happened since the collapse of the troll's bridge. Augen learned that only a few other goats had completed the journey, and that many had died in the bridge collapse. Augen felt some responsibility for this, having been part of the cause for the collapse. Apart from that he received some information from Tanzerin in regards to her ideals of happiness, which went into his notes regarding the meaning of life.
At some point, Augen cleaned out and refurbished a dumpster behind a bakery, making it into a decent bedroom of sorts that no longer smelled of rotting fruit and used nappies. Whoever owned the dumpster, however, does not seem to be aware of Augen's residence and it's a wonder he hasn't woken up to a heap of trash in his face.
When the annual ciderfest came around, Augen went to check it out. He left pretty much right as he arrived, due to having already drawn suspicion. However, while there he met a pegasus named Boulder Dash, who seemed to know some information regarding Hercinia. Augen later met up with Boulder, and the two went to an inn to exchange relevant information. There Augen learned of the ruins where Luna had descended from her incarceration... And that Boulder would soon be investigating these ruins if he could get authorization from Princess Luna. Augen made his leave after taking up the offer to accompany the pegasus if requisite conditions were to be met.
Sometime after Boulder Dash left for Canterlot, the fountain in the Town Square ran dry, and Augen Horns watched as a mob of angry ponies harassed a griffon who had come to investigate the problem. Augen Horns, not sure what the problem was, decided to spark up conversation with the feathered beast and was eventually offered the job of assisting him in the task of solving the irrigation problem.

Pickle Surprise!
"Take an english muffin. Spread sandwich spread. Plop the hay thusly."
Pickle Surprise is the daughter of a unicorn stallion and an earth-pony mare. Her mother was a professional racehorse, and thus was often leaving home to participate in competitions. This left her father, the owner of a deli/bakery in canterlot, with the responsibilities of both taking care of his daughter and managing his business. To kill two birds with one stone, he started working her in the backroom from an early age, handling shipments and storage.
In consideration of her namesake, Pickle Surprise took an interest in the process of pickling cucumbers. Then she grew curious about using the process on other foods. Then other things. She realized it was a phase of curiosity, she never wanted to be stuck in the business. So she was appauled when she found the image of a pickle jar on her flank. She felt embarassed, insulted by circumstance. Yet she always seemed to go back to pickling things. Nonetheless, she decided she wanted to do something other than deli work with her life. She began studying science. Mad science.
Eventually when she had reached adulthood, she moved out and developed a laboratory where she continued to practice the sciences. Emotionally, though, she never really grew up. She was stuck in her past, but without the wonder of someday finding her special talent. As a result, she always kept the mindset of a child, even as she stepped hoof into madness. She was never able to find business, and even though she kept a hobby of the sciences she wound up working in her father's business again.
