MEET THE DASHS
[/u][/size]Welcome to the thread known as "Meet the Dashs": Information provided to you for no real important reason based on Boulder Dash and his family. I would like to remind everyone that though Boulder Dash is a blue pegasus, he has no relation to Rainbow Dash so try not to get those mixed up.
All information provided on Boulder Dash, his relations with others, or whatever else I come up with will be updated periodically whenever I see the need. This isn't really so much for importance as it is just to keep myself amused every now and again with creative writing.
Bellow is listed the Table of Contents for quick and easy access to various information split into the categories of Relations, Journal, and History.
Also, do excuse when I may sometimes post repeatedly after myself. I do it to keep my things organized and sometimes may use up the character limit, so having little choice. But rest assured this isn't without reason.
Relations: This is information about the ponies Boulder Dash has been in contact with and his relationship with them, as well as jotted additional info through his perspective. Your character might be here! This category shares the same post space as Journal. In addition, extra characters that appear here (such as Geode and Sapphire) are not available for adoption and will only have support NPC positions.
Journal: Boulder Dash's private journal he jots down, detailing his thoughts of events he has participated in. A good explorer is always sure to keep good track of his exploits and events in his life as discoveries are sometimes made by retracing steps. This category shares the same post space as Relations.
History: The information located here are background details of Boulder Dash or his family prior to his journey here at MLP:RPG. Because this section can get rather long, they are given their own posts when needed, so pardon the extra posts when they occur. Stories will be kept in order of when they occur, so there can be some major changes made every now and again.

Boulder Dash
About:
Boulder Dash is a freshman student at Manehattan College and aspires to follow in his parents' hoof-steps to be an archeologist, geologist, and an explorer. His parents are Geode and Sapphire Dash, whom both work at Manehattan College. Boulder is of the higher income class, but his upbringing has taught him to show respects to ponies of any class.
Boulder's left wing is gimp due to an accident involving giant cave spiders and lacks the ability to fly like other pegasi.
His full name is "Boulder Rockford Dash".
Blue
Relationship:
Himself.
Boulder's Notes:
"I remember when I had to get this picture for the freshman section of the yearbook. I'm used to having to pamper myself up a bit everyday for school because of their school uniforms and regulations, but ma spent hours on me trying to style my mane and that not a speck of dirt was on me. I love her and all, but that was just insane. At least I DO look good in this picture. I just wouldn't want to put up with the hassle on a regular basis."
Geode Dash
About:
Geode Dash is a stallion of the world's natural history, able to identify the secrets the earth as to share. He's always been a native to the city of Manehattan and attended the college himself when he was young.
He's dived into countless caves during his years and knows all the proper safety guides like the back of his hoof. Naturally, this led him to now and again meet up with unsavory creatures which he had to fend off. When Geode isn't leading and recruited for his council in expeditions into caves or sometimes even ruins, he teaches geology classes at Manehattan College. He's had over thirty years of experience in his field of study.
While teaching his classes, especially when he is training students the arts of spelunking, he sometimes becomes as strict and stern as a military drill sergeant. He will yell, he will scream, and he will put down his students if they're not doing things right. He's even been known to gather students who think they know better in an after-class session and show them, at times, some disturbing images of things he has seen in his experience. But through the harshness to his students, he does this all only because he cares and doesn't want to sugar coat what might happen because of somepony gets careless. "If you think I'm bad, wait until you get out there and make the same mistake in the field. I, at least, won't kill you for these mistakes; the field might." As such, he takes the lives of his students very seriously since it could be what he teaches them in the classroom that may save their life while exploring. As such, he's actually earns a lot of respect from his students for his strict nature of teaching.
He met his wife, Sapphire Dash, while investigating the abandoned gold mine shafts in the deserts outside of Appleloosa on an expedition team. Together, the two worked with one another's professions to aid the other in their research and published a few books on the subjects. Their best selling book is entitled "Ancient Cities and the Lands Founded Upon".
Geode's cutie mark resembles a cracked open rock with a few crystals embedded inside, otherwise known as (of course) a geode.
Brown
Relationship:
Boulder Dash's father and geology teacher at the college.
Boulder's Notes:
"Pa is one hoof of a tough teacher. I mean, the guy has been teaching me all he knows all my life, but being with him in the classroom with him as my teacher is a different story. I thought I'd be able to get through in a breeze, but Pa likes to really push me hard. Maybe I'm just overreacting. He pushes the other ponies hard as well. Though despite how harsh he is, so many of the students look up to him because, in the end, he is a great teacher."
Sapphire Dash
About:
Sapphire Dash is a fair mare, her maiden name being "Sapphire Shimmer" before marrying her husband, Geode Dash.
In her younger years, Sapphire lived with her folks in an abandoned ghost town outside what is modern day Appleloosa, being exceptionally poor. Her family had moved out generations before when there was a gold rush going on, but failed to strike it rich. When the gold dried up, the boom town quickly vanished with Sapphire's family being one of the very few left behind due to investment debts. This caused Sapphire to be doing back breaking work ever since she was a filly and never got a typical education, much less modern conveniences like electricity or phone, both of which she wasn't aware even existed. She barely knew how to read or write even when she became a young adult.
But always willing to learn and try her best, she'd be a volunteer helper for whenever some expedition team would come to check out the old mines scattered across the deserts, just so that way she could get some experience and education. It was during one of these trips that she met the young and fresh from college graduate Geode Dash, the two hitting it off quickly. As the pair fell in love, Geode offered to help get Sapphire into the Manehattan College. When she said that she would have no means to repay him, Geode said they could consider the deal settled if she were to become his wife. The rest is history.
These days, Sapphire teaches archeology at the Manehattan College and writing books based on her research findings. She's also very protective of her son, Boulder Dash, due to an accident where she feared she had almost lost him when he was younger.
Sapphire's cutie mark is a blue, emerald-cut sapphire.
126180
Relationship:
Boulder Dash's mother (but not his teacher for archeology this year at the college).
Boulder's Notes:
"I hate it when the other ponies call me a mama's boy. It is completely embarrassing when she does things like wipe my face when I have food on my cheek right in front of my friends, or constantly demands that sit still as she does my mane. It is one thing to have this stuff happen as a little colt, but I'm in college and she still treats me like a baby.
I know the thing with the spiders really scared her since she thought I was going to die, but that was forever ago! Come on, ma! Take a page from pa's book. He was scared too, but at least he's letting me grow up."
Carl House
About:
Carl House is the butler that has been serving the Dash family for decades. He first got the job long ago when Geode was just a knee-high colt. Having an amazing work record of never taking a single day off from his job in the past fifty years, he's in remarkable shape despite his elderly age. Typically a pony of few words, he's still always happy to serve.
Carl's duties include the well being of the Dash family and keeping the residents clean. Though whenever he is seen, he's just standing around quietly, awaiting orders. Nopony has ever seen him actually working. Yet his business is evident as everything is always so well kept that even the most unused book in a corner of the private library can pass the white glove test without a speck of dust. This is quite amazing considering he's neither a unicorn that can use magic nor a pegasus who can fly.
It is not uncommon for him to assist the professors in some of their studies as well as an aid and adviser. Geode has even taught the old stallion how to do some spelunking, so Carl House is often seen aiding Geode when he holds his after-class free Expedition Workshop for his students.
Carl House's cutie mark looks like a feather duster.
Relationship:
Boulder's family butler. Though they are not related, Boulder has known him all of his life and looks to him like as-if he were a true member of the family. He looks towards him as almost like a grandfatherly figure.
Boulder's Notes:
"Note to self: Don't ever get into an arm wrestling match with Carl again. Pony nearly took my arm off. Man, he's a lot stronger than he looks... and I'm no push over!"
Image to Come
Duenna Nursemaid
About:
Duenna was hired into the household shortly after the accident involving the cave spiders. For their son's safety, Geode and Sapphire had cut down dramatically on how often they'd take their son on expeditions with them just to be safe. Usually, either one parent or the other would stay behind to watch over their son while the other leaves for work. But with teaching at the college, or sometimes duty calls for both parents have to leave for work, there would still be a need to watch over young Boulder.
That's where Duenna comes into play. Hired as a private nanny, as well as a maid, she helped the Dashs raise their son when the extra help is required. This unicorn saw a lot of use when Boulder was younger, but now he's old enough to take care of himself, Duenna sees to some cleaning duties, some cooking, and tending to the gardens of the Dash estate. She's still quite attached to the family regardless and has been granted permanent employment. She's also well loved for making fresh, home-made pink lemonade.
Her cutie mark resembles a cheery looking sun.
Relationship:
Boulder's nanny when he was younger. But now that he's older and no longer requires a nanny, she earns her pay by occasionally cooking meals for the family, assisting Carl in the cleaning (when she can), and tending to the flower and vegetable beds.
Boulder's Notes:
"One thing I like about Duenna is that she experiments with different dishes. Now ma, she's an awesome cook as she does the same thing, using the vegetables we grow in the gardens and all, but I equally look forward to Duenna's cooking! But here is a guilty pleasure... I don't know how she does it, but she makes the best peanut butter, jelly, and banana sandwiches around. I don't care if that is foal's food, she somehow makes it perfect EVERY TIME. It is the perfect snack!"
Zakashi
About:
Zakashi, better known by his nickname of Zak, is a foreign exchange student from the Zebra Lands. Originally from a very primitive and poor village where they lacked any of the sophistication that even the poorest of ponies in Equestria have over the zebra kin, Zak had put in great effort to win a scholarship so he could study in Equestria and granted an education that would otherwise not have been available to him.
Transferring over while about in the 6th grade, Zak had a very difficult time fitting in with the other ponies because of his difficulty with trying to learn the tongue and his accent. Everypony seemed to avoid him because he was different, so for a while he considered just returning home if he couldn't fit in.
That's about the time he met Boulder Dash. It was because Zak was so different that caught Boulder's attention. He instantly won him over as a friend when he started to speak the native tongue that Zakashi grew up with in his home land. Being introduced to Boulder's parents, both of whom knew a great wealth of his land's culture, it was like having a second family.
These days, Zak studies to be a world class chef at the Manehattan College. He's been able to fit in much better over the years as his tongue had been sharpened in the pony tongue, his accent even shrinking a bit. Still, he never forgets his roots and celebrates holidays from his home land and even occasionally returns home to visit his family. They always look forward to hear his tales of Equestria.
His Cutie Mark (if you can call it that), is of the symbol in his native tongue called "asase ye duru", meaning "the Earth has weight". It symbolizes the importance of the Earth sustaining life, reflecting Zak's passion for creating healthy, delicious, and of course sustaining meals.
Relationship:
Zak and Boulder are the best of friends, doing just about everything together, even though they study different fields. He considers the Dash family like members of his own, looking up to them greatly and always thankful for their guidance.
Boulder's Notes:
"Aww man, this guy is just CRAZY! Aside from him making the best dishes around (sorry ma!), he's like the best wing pony a guy could ask for! The fillies just totally go crazy over his accent and his stories about living in a grass and mud hut back home (which he's not lying about). Hard to think that everypony used to be afraid of him because of that, but now he's like the coolest guy because he overcame so much. Plus, he's a genius. Not every zebra gets to study in Equestria, much less Manehattan, one of the top colleges around! Of course, it did help when pa put in those good words for him."
Skyhammer Mortar
About:
A royal guard that serves Princess Luna and is of high enough rank to arrange some meetings with her, so it seems. While looking tough and intimidating, he's in reality a softy.
Relationship:
Royal guard met in the streets outside Manehattan College. Said he'd try to arrange for a private meeting with Princess Luna.
Boulder's Notes:
"Without warning, this guy drops out from the sky and questions my motive with my pickaxe. His worries are quickly put to rest when I told him I am a student of the archeological and geographical departments of Manehattan College and showing him some proof. While scary at first glance, he's actually got a big, soft spot. Through discussion, he offered to organize a meeting for me with Princess Luna to possibility of getting to investigate the Ruins of the Sisters, where Princess Luna had been returned to normal after her banishment to the moon. All in efforts of giving me a much more exciting paper to write about over my vacation!
I'm sure to meet him again when I get to Canterlot and cannot wait to meet with Princess Luna. Though I am a bit nervous, admitting it now... but treat her with respect and all should be fine, I hope."
Augen Horns
About:
A goat from the distant country of Hercinia, a former "criminal" who was arrested on suspicions of ties with wanted individuals. He was released by order of Prime Minister Walliser, Hercinia's current leader, to discover the secret to Equestria's peace. However, the story seems inconsistent.
Relationship:
Met him at the Ciderfest at Sweet Apple Acres. While Boulder is trying to be friendly, inside he currently has his guard up about Augen.
Boulder's Notes:
"While at Sweet Apple Acres for this Ciderfest, I stumbled upon Augen while mingling with the ponies. I was amazed a genuine Hercinian resident was there, but he acts awfully strange, like he is on the run from the law.
I invited him over to my hotel room to talk since it was either that or the dumpster he lives in behind some store. He tells me he was released from prison by the Hercinia prime minister to uncover the secrets to Equestria's peace since Celestia knows the political unbalance Augen's country is in. But why would the prime minister trust such a task to a criminal? It doesn't add up.
I'm trying to be friendly, but I'm keeping an eye and ear open on this goat. I know better than to judge those not from Equestria better than anypony, but he's got an odd tale to tell and I do not think he's telling me the whole truth."
Diamond Star
About:
Diamond Star is the daughter of Golden and Silver Star from the Manehattan College District. The Stars are all a wealthy family, having their own mansion like the Dash family. Diamond herself acts like the typical rich snob with a nose raised high and detests filth. She has been sent to Ponyville by her father to make her learn some more modest life lessons.
Relationship:
Geode Dash has known Golden Star for many years, having in some ways similar personality traits. They've been friends since before their own children's births, so Boulder and Diamond have just about always known one another. It wasn't until Diamond got lost in a cave when she was twelve and Boulder, who was nine at the time, rescued her and their friendship grew more. However, this wasn't on a romantic scale as for the years before, they were aware of one another, but not exactly friends.
Boulder's Notes:
"I hate to say it, but Diamond can be such a snob. She turns her nose to some great dishes because it is "common pony" food. But hey, that doesn't stop my Ma from sometimes feeding her "exotic and foreign" dishes from other countries that is in reality the common food of a different place.
She does have some skill, though. She's got an eye for business like her pa. However, she's not above using others to get her way... I sometimes wonder how we get along. She's like a sister I never had to me, but sometimes wow. I just know she'd never accept an invitation from me to go to a cave; she HATES getting dirty.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen her in a while. I wonder what she's up to?"
JOURNAL
Entry #1: Packing Up
Day OX
Well, tomorrow is the big day. After I finish up my morning classes, I'm officially on Spring Break. I've been planning for this for the past month and I'm pretty stoked about it: My trip around Equestria! It also gives me an excuse to get my report done for Prof. Rusty Scraps. Yeah, can't believe he actually gave a homework assignment for the break, though. I was expecting pa to make us work on something, but not Scraps.
Speaking of which, Pa is glad I'll be doing this trip, saying it'll be a good learning experience. Ma, on the other hand, just wants me to stay home like the other ponies would, but she can't keep me from growing up. We've already decided that I'll be going tomorrow.
I wonder where I'll go first... I've got a list of places I'd like to go, but I know I won't be able to hit them all. But if at all possible, I've got to try to get into the tunnels under Canterlot. With as old as that city is, the sewers there is rich of Equestria's history. I dunno if I can get further than the catacombs tour, but pa says he'll try writing a few letters of recommendations for me so I can get a few behind the scenes peeks of some places, but no promises.
Anyway, I'll finish up my packing tomorrow. I've got most everything, save for my pick, hat, and things I'll be picking up on my way out of town tomorrow. For the time being, got to get to bed. Still have classes in the morning and want to catch Pa on his way out the door since I won't get the chance later.
So good night and here is hoping for the best on my journey.

Entry #2: A Royal Audience
Day XO
I cannot believe my luck! And I mean that in a good way, too! Shortly after leaving my house and on my way to the surplus store for some supplies, I met a Royal Canterlot guard who stopped me in the streets because he thought my pickaxe was awfully suspicious. When I explained to him I was just a student from the college, majoring in the fields of Archeology and Geology (along with some proof), he dropped the topic and brought up idle conversation about my studies.
Not raised to be rude to anypony, I engaged in conversation with Mr. Mortar as we walked to the store. I told him I was more than likely going to head to Canterlot to study the crypts under the city with supervision of my father's colleagues. He then asked if I wanted to study the Ruins of the Sisters in Everfree Forest. I was caught off-guard at first as I thought he meant the Everfree Mansion, but nope! He meant the actual ruins where Princess Luna, previously known as Nightmare Moon, had been defeated with the Elements of Harmony and returned to normal.
Previously, those ruins weren't of much interest to anypony. It was highly believed anything about that place had nothing worth to offer anymore, but since that is where Nightmare Moon was defeated, its historical value is now through the roof! I know Ma would die for a chance to go there again and see if there is anything new to look into since what has happened. So if I got to get even level one access to the place, it'd be amazing.
But first, I have to get to Canterlot. Mr. Skyhammer Mortar went ahead to try to arrange a meeting for me with Princess Luna. I must admit, I'm both excited and nervous at the same time. I once got to meet Princess Celestia, but that was only at the Grand Galloping Gala the other year and a lot of ponies waited for a chance to say "hi" to her.
This is different, though. It is an audience with Princess Luna herself and I'm nervous about it. I've mingled with the highest socialites in all of Equestria, but to come face to face with the legendary Princess Luna, who once tried to use her powers to keep Equestria in eternal darkness, having been banished to the moon for one-thousand years, and who legends just say is an evil pony? Part of me says to mind my tongue closely, or I'll be the one sent to the moon.
I should know better, though. Princess Celestia has welcomed her back with comforting embrace and encourages everypony to do the same. Just old habits die hard, but we're trying. Ma actually sympathizes for Princess Luna because she is out of her time. Being away for a thousand years and to now be where we are today, it is said she has a tough time adjusting to the changes. She speaks in an old tongue and tends to shout with the Royal Canterlot Voice. And since Ma originally grew up without even going to public school, knowing how to read, or anything that the world outside her home had, she just can relate.
Anyhoo, I'm now outside the Everfree Forest on a side road, having set up camp for the night. My tent is made, my nap sack is laid out, and have a stew cooking over the fire made with mostly wild plant life I found out here. Many ponies are afraid of sleeping in their back yard, so they'll never try camping out in the wilderness. So sad that the true nature of the world is so strange and unnatural to them... and I'm a city slicker, high class pony! I find this stuff exciting! Of course, I had the best teacher, too: My Pa. Just keep my head level and remember everything he taught me, and I'll be fine.
Now, I plan to be getting up in the morning before dawn. I made good progress today considering I have to get to Canterlot with all haste and wasn't able to schedual a ticket there. By my estimates, I will be in Ponyville before high noon tomorrow.
Once there, my first priority will be check in at a local inn and get cleaned up. After that, I'll want to get myself a train ticket to Canterlot so I don't have to go all on hoof. I'd say two-three days leeway will be plenty good. Once I have a ticket arranged, I'll check out these places I read about in the magazines.
First place would be the Ponyville Bathhouse. They're said to be a very luxurious spa and I want to make an appointment there before I board the train for Canterlot. When meeting with royalty, one has to look their best.
And speaking of which, there is also a an infamous fashion salon in Ponyville as well that many critics are approving of. Let's see... Carousel Boutique, I believe it was? I'll have to see if I can get something simple, yet refined, made up for me to wear for the meeting. The store owner there is a unicorn named Rarity. And if the papers don't lie, she's also the representation of the Element of Generosity, so it might not hurt to ask her some questions.
Hmm... the other ponies who represent the Elements of Harmony live there in Ponyville. They're all girls, but pop quiz time for me.
Rarity = Generosity
Fluttershy = Kindness
Rainbow Dash = Loyalty
Applejack = Honesty
Pinkamena Diane Pie = Laughter
Twilight Sparkle = Magic
I think that's right. All live in Ponyville, so if I get to investigate the ruins, I'll certainly have to hit them up for an interview. But Twilight Sparkle, I think I'll really have to speak with. Not only is she the Element of Magic, she's also the personal student of Princess Celestia and is on first name basis with them. Surely, she'll be able to give me some insight as to Princess Luna, so I'll try to visit her when I have the chance.
Look at the time. I've been writing for a while, haven't I? Keep at it any longer, I'll burn my stew! Well, time to put the pen down as my jaw is getting tired anyway. Time to eat, do some stretches, then go to bed. Have a busy day tomorrow and I still have a lot of ground to cover if I'm to make it to Ponyville by my estimated time.
Until next time, journal.

Rarity = Generosity
Fluttershy = Kindness
Rainbow Dash = Loyalty
Applejack = Honesty
