Luna's moon was glistening beautifully as always throughout Equestria. It was only half an hour past sunset, but one couldn't tell just how fast time flew by when they spend as much time in the Everfree Forest as Dark Star. It had been entirely necessary for her work though, much of the forest was quiet enough to prevent any kind of disturbances, and she couldn't get in any kind of trouble with Ponyville's local authorities either. She loved the ambiance of the forest so, yet it always became lonesome rather quickly. Luckily for her though, she had brought a guest with her-the former pop diva, Hummingbird Heartbeat.
The pop pegasus shivered intensely as she followed behind the black-and-red unicorn. She didn't know how, but somehow Dark Star had managed to convince her to tag along during one of late-night expeditions to the forest. There was all manner of unpleasant...things to be found in the forest, more than half of which were known to be incredibly lethal. And yet, here she was, practically one foreleg holding onto Dark Star's tail for safety as the two ventured through the woods. "D-D-D-Dark Star..." Hummingbird practically whispered. The astronomer looked back at her guest, feeling a little concerned for her well-being. "What is it?" she inquired. "Did I really have to come with you?" Hummingbird asked. Dark Star chuckled at this and smiled with her eyes closed. "You were the one who wanted to get to know me better, not to mention what I did for a living" she reminded. After hearing that, Hummingbird immediately cursed at herself for not thinking about what she was getting into.
Dark Star chuckled once more, feeling a small thrill as she led the pegasus to a large clearing by the river. She immediately unpacked and levitated her equipment out, setting her work telescope onto the grass as she telekinetically handed a checklist to Hummingbird. "Y-You're sure we aren't in any danger?" Hummingbird asked once again. Dark Star smiled and nodded. "For what I believe is the eighth time, yes, I'm positive that we're safe" she answered, allowing Hummingbird to let out a relieved sigh. "Unless of course...if you believe the story of the forest siren?" Dark Star added with a sinister grin and a momentary flash of bright red in her eyes. Hummingbird's eyes shot open right away, her tea-green pupils shrinking immediately. "T-The what?" she worriedly asked.
Never having pulled a prank before, Dark Star immediately took a liking to it. 'Perhaps Slipstream was right about it. Still, I shouldn't worry poor Hummingbird like this, I fear she may not have the heart to handle something like this' she pondered before continuing. After looking at the pop pegasus' knees knocking against each other, Dark Star placed a hoof on the younger mare's white coat, giving her a warm smile to reassure her confidence. "I'm sorry, I was just playing a little joke on you" she stated, making Hummingbird's trembling immediately stop. Dark Star bowed her head down slightly, Hummingbird having to tilt her head slightly to avoid getting accidentally speared by the unicorn's horn.
After ignoring a slightly-mad impulse, Hummingbird gave a little smile, followed by an even-more relieved sigh. "Please don't do that, it's bad enough Slipstream and that cousin of yours scare me senseless after nightfall, I don't want you doing it either" Hummingbird asked with a worried facial expression. Dark Star looked up at her and smiled. "I apologize for doing that, it was just something I suppose I wanted to try at least once" the astronomer explained. Hummingbird broke away from her grip and trotted closer to the river. After a quick splashing of her head in the water, Hummingbird came back, feeling a bit more calm than the last time. "Well, I guess we can just get this over with now, right?" Hummingbird inquired. Dark Star could practically feel how tense the pop pegasus was, and started to think about ways to get her to relax. "If it isn't too much trouble, could you perhaps try singing a bit, I'm certain it would help you relax?" the astronomer suggested.
While she questioned the motion a bit, Hummingbird couldn't deny that singing from time to time did usually help her unwind during times when she was nervous or anxious. She gave a slight bow to Dark Star before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath. Within minutes, she was feeling the rhythm building up around her, the scenery changing in accordance to her imagination. Without inhibition, Hummingbird began to sing. There were no lyrics, only a few short, opera-esque arias to her voice, the sound resonating throughout the entire forest within seconds. Dark Star smiled and relaxed, soothed by the tone she had selected and relieved to know that she had succeeded in what she planned. 'May the night truly commence' she thought as she began to gaze at the stars.
