During my time here I've been asked quite a lot "what map do we follow on this site?"
This is a very valid question, because of the level and scope of the roleplay that goes on here there surely is a lot of places people want to go and will go to. Before the show ever revealed its official map of Equestria there was a fan made map that became peoples sort of go to map for this sort of thing. The map in question was made by one Hlissner on deviantART for one of his fanfics. The map in question was so incredible and in depth that it was a no brainer for rp'ers and other people telling stories to use this map and it slowly became somewhat of an unofficial standard for the world.
However Hasbro after a few years revealed the map of Equestria themselves, which kind of messed things up a bit for people trying to stick to canon like us. The map is slightly small and while looks very pretty is rather unimpressive in my opinion and I'm not sure if its just me but the proportions of the map just don't feel in synch with the distances of the show.
So you may be thinking "well since this is a canon site we have to use the canon map right?" Well the answer to that is happily a big fat no. You are not restricted to using the canon map. The site was sort of unofficially running on the map by Hlissner before the official one came along so it was decided it would be too unfair to just take away the sheer depth and scope that his map offered you.
It runs a little further than that however. Because the map is not canon, creative liberties are allowed to be taken with the content of the fan map. What I mean by this is the map is not law, only locations seen in the show are law and are defiantly there no questions asked. You can create your own nations and you can add content if you wish, however you cannot do this willy nilly. If you want to create your own country and nation, we ask that you put a little bit of time and effort into it and not simply state where it is. The best example of all of this comes from our very good mod, Ashti Sandburst.
Ashti, through his own hard work and creativity has made his own entire nation within the fan map. He set out a little area within a country that was already in the fan map and created his own nation known as Deerham. From this he created an entire guide (which can be found here) that goes into frankly insane detail about this place and really makes it feel real. Now I'm not asking you all to put that much into it as that would be sadistic, but it clearly demonstrates what can be done if you put your mind to it. I hope this clears up any qualms you may have or questions concerning this little issue, we pride on offering our members a great freedom and opportunity for creativity here and I hope this gives you that.
Side note: if you are going to make your own nation, make sure you inform a staff member via a pm so we can keep track of it all.
