(( Hey everyone! Figured we should get an early start on a Nightmare Night/Halloween thread. First off, no post-order to worry about on this one, and you don't have to post more than once if you don't want to! Basically, it's kind of an excuse to show off your OCs in costume or enjoying the festivities if you want. Happy Nightmare Night! ))
Cobblestone stared at the transformed Ponyville in wonderment. The town was usually fairly cheerful and decidedly pastel-colored, but now it was decidedly grim and macabre, but in an entirely cheerful sense. Of course, this was because it was Nightmare Night, an evening of costumes, candy, and frights for ponies young and old. For Cobblestone, this was more or less every day of his life since he'd been adopted, but it seemed like every pony in town was in on it this time. There were banners, streamers, balloons, some buildings had been repainted, even the town's train-whistle had been tuned to a more slightly chilling note than usual.
Of course back at the orphanage they celebrated Nightmare Night as well, but nothing on this scale. The little shadow watched other ponies trot past eagerly in their costumes, a wonderful variety of all sorts, really. Most anypony in Ponyville that had anything to do with tailoring was eagerly offering their services for specially made costumes, Mannequin Grace had kindly offered access to the theater's wardrobe department, and Cobble's sister Waxworks was the last word in frighteningly realistic and disturbing make-up and effects for costumes. He looked at his own costume appreciatively, the two extra cloth legs on either side done up to match the fuzzy leggings he was wearing, a small pair of pipe-cleaner bobbers attached to his collar. The overall effect of the striped, furry costume was to give him the appearance of a large tarantula, which it did quite well. An unexpected side effect Cobblestone wasn't prepared for was more ponies noticing him than usual, since his shadowy black pelt was covered up.
"There's my little spiderbro!" Came a cheerful voice from behind him. He whirled around to see a changeling in mid-transformation, various candy-cane like stripes of it the standard black with blue tinges, and a clever use of small mirrors to make the appearance of holes. The rest of the changeling was waxy white and somewhat scarier looking than its darker portions. Waxworks grinned and nosed one of her brother's fuzzy pedipalps. "Have you gotten much candy yet?"
Cobblestone blinked and realized he'd completely forgotten about the candy part of it. He'd been so stunned seeing everypony pitching in with the sort of fervor for fright he'd normally only ever seen in his big sister, that he was just sort of enjoying watching all of the activity. "Oh, uhm, no.. but I will!"
Waxworks grinned and lowered her head to flip her spider-brother onto her back, trotting along. "Don't worry, there's plenty of candy to be had, and frights to be given, and screams and scares and starts and... oh there's just so much to do!"
"And so much to taste," came a gregarious voice as a smartly-dressed blue pegasus trotted up alongside them. He was in a bowler hat, a black coat that seemed slightly longer than it should have been, a pair of spectacles on a string, and he was wearing a stylish beard as well.
"Hello Dusty Pan," said Cobblestone, smiling while trying to figure out what the costume was. He gave up fairly quickly though, "who are you supposed to be?"
"Ah, my little friend, I am none other than that famed painter from Prance, Too-Loose LaTrot!" He lifted up a decanter with a sparkling green liquid inside, and sipped it happily, "would you like some lime-ade?"
"Not right now Dusty," said Waxworks cheerfully, starting to move faster, "we're behind schedule on candy and creeping!"
"Bonne chance!" Cheered Dusty LaTrot, lifting his green glass to them as they sped on.
They zipped past a house of mirrors that had been put together, and a bobbing-for-apples tank as well. The town hall had the grandstand set up for the costume contest later that evening, ponies were dancing and chasing one another, and the changeling and the tarantula were just about to bowl over a unicorn, an event which took place a moment later.
They tumbled for a moment before the entire collection came to a thudding stop at the chest of a large, multi-colored pegasus. Galvanic Reaction eyed the pile for a moment with her normal, steaming gaze before helping the mint-colored pegasus up. "You alright, Stitches?"
Galvanic didn't come to Ponyville often but had been trying to make more of a point of it after her recent reunion with her fillyhood friend Rivet Stitch. Rivet had invited her to take part in the festivities, but Gally certainly wasn't expecting to see her friend clad in a billowing pirate queen outfit, compliments of Mannequin Grace's collection of costumes. She hadn't brought a costume herself deciding it was too immature, but now that she saw every single pony in town in costume she was beginning to feel out of place and didn't like the feeling.
"Oooh, hiyas Gally! OOOH! Nice costume Riv," cheered Waxworks, untangling herself from her brother's many legs.
"Thank you, Waxworks," said Pirate Queen Rivet in her usual tone. "I like your costume too, and Cobblestone, you look very, very cute."
The arachnid pony blushed brightly, while the two-toned pegasus regarded the pair. Galvanic had to admit she was somewhat fond of the creepy siblings she'd met a few weeks ago, but still these were two more costumes, and exceedingly well done ones too.
"Hey Stitches, look, I think I'm going to take off," said Gally with an uncaring tone. She quickly found the changeling pony clinging to her.
"Oooh, wait, Gally! You can't leave yet! You don't have a costume!"
Galvanic grimaced a bit, especially when Rivet joined in, "I'm certain Waxworks can fix you up with one in just a few minutes."
"No, really, I-"
For as big a pegasus as she was, she was no match for raw, unbridled enthusiasm tempered by the the presence of her oldest friend. It was for that reason she soon found herself backstage at the Puppet Theater, where a small Cerberus was helping ponies into various costumes. The Cerberus was actually a fairly complex puppet costume, with two false heads being worn on either side of Mannequin Grace's head, her magic being used to animate them. Although as far as three-headed dogs go it was fairly unimposing as the three canine heads all had a decidedly 'cheerful puppy' appearance to them.
"Manny! We need a costume quick!" Said Waxy, pushing the large pegasus in. The Cerberus barked happily from two of its heads, the third remaining silent, but as a whole it pointed to one of the plus-sized racks, which Rivet Stitch examined thoughtfully.
"Look, I'm not into-"
"Maybe a weretimberwolf?"
"No I don't-"
"OOOH, how about a phantasm?"
"Hey, I'm not-"
"I think this would be best," said Rivet, emerging from the collection of costumes with a mostly black outfit, which Gally stared at for a moment. A few minutes later she emerged from backstage wearing the sort of outfit you'd use to break into a building, a black number with ropes and grappling hooks, and a decidedly high-tech set of night-vision goggles to compliment the look. Galvanic was now something right out of a spy thriller, and she was suddenly feeling much more comfortable with the Nightmare Night celebrations.
"Hey, Works..." she said, nodding slightly. There was a thanks in there somewhere but it was inaudible. "C'mon Stitches, I want to check out that House of Mirrors."
Cobblestone watched the pirate and the spy exit the theater, and after waving a goodbye to the three headed puppeteer, he and his sister trotted back out into the town for more thrills and chills.
