ooc: This is an open thread in which Waxy's villainous npc will give my easily manipulated, weak-minded unicorn character a magical amulet known as the Mirror World Amulet; which will possess Rapid. As a result, Rapid will become this thread's villain. So just as warning to you guys, he will be pretty powerful in this particular thread. I need him to be, so he can be an effective villain and an actual threat. But I will try to make him not too op, so he can be defeated in the end. Thanks and enjoy!
bic: It was a nice warm sunny day in Ponyville and there was a calmness in the air. All the ponies could feel that today was going to be a good day. Even the local animals could sense the shared happiness of the residents. The birds were all singing while the squirrels gathered their acorns. All seemed well in Ponyville. That is except for a certain stressed out blue unicorn struggling to form a protective shield around a small pebble. For months he had been practicing without any signs of improvement. He was quite literally on the verge of giving up altogether since he had no idea what he was doing wrong. Not even his spell knowledgeable mentor seemed to be of much help. In fact, Free Thinker only seemed to make his frustrations grow.
Feeling bored from watching his apprentice fail, Free Thinker yawned. "Well as predicted your little shield spell short circuited, didn't it? But then what else is new? I mean really ever since you 'learned' the spell you've been coming here to the park practicing it almost once a week. It's so predictable like clockwork," he rather bluntly pointed out.
Rapid's face reddened as he looked at the pebble in frustration before kicking it away. "Yes, but why won't my spell work? Why can't I do it? I mean I studied that spell for a long time and been practicing it like you said, so even with all that why can't I do it? And worst of all those princesses make it look so easy. Makes me think there is something wrong with me since they can do it with no problem and I can't!" he yelled out in frustration.
Free Thinker simply shrugged. "I don't know kid," he admitted with a yawn.
Rapid thought a moment. "Maybe the problem isn't with the spell. Maybe the problem lies with me. Maybe I'm just...defective and just no good at magic," moaned Rapid sadly feeling sorry for himself.
Free Thinker just laughed. "Come on Rapid, stop being so melodramatic! None of what you just said about yourself is true. You're getting better at magic everyday," Free Thinker attempted to reassure him.
However, Rapid didn't buy it and just laughed. "Ha, yeah right! You call my protective energy shields constantly dissipating getting better? I'm sorry, but if that is truly the case then you have a funny opinion on what's considered an improvement, my friend," Rapid bitterly retorted.
Getting annoyed by his apprentice's growing self doubt, Free Thinker just groaned. "Well maybe if you weren't so distracted lately then you could create magical shields as well as some other complex spells. Maybe you could become really powerful," Free Thinker pointed out.
For a few seconds Rapid appeared lost in thought until he just very randomly shouted, "NO!" And when Free Thinker gave him a funny look, Rapid relaxed. "I'm sorry Free Thinker, but me and lots of power, while it may sound cool on the outside may not actually be the best idea," Rapid admitted sheepishly.
Free Thinker just stared back at his apprentice with a stunned expression on his face. "What? No! Why do you think that? I mean that is to say, I thought you wanted your powers to grow?" Free Thinker asked, clearly confused by Rapid's sudden change of mind.
Rapid took a deep breath. "Not at the expense of hurting others," Rapid sharply cried out without really thinking.
Free Thinker just nodded. "Well yeah, I mean I never said..." Free Thinker began only for his agitated apprentice to interrupt him.
"Oh you didn't have to! Like how we didn't hurt all those poor ponies in that small village we were living in? Just like how watching all their misery didn't feel good at all," Rapid snapped.
Surprised by Rapid's words, Free Thinker just gasped. And for several long moments there was silence between the two for the turquoise coated earth pony wasn't sure what to do much less say. His blue eyes just blinked in confusion for he had failed to recognize the sarcastic tone in Rapid's voice. "Sooooo it didn't feel good to you what we did in that dirty little town? Because just between you and me, what we did was just hilarious! Come on Rapid even you have to admit that it was funny!" the earth pony declared laughing.
However, Rapid was not the least bit amused. "Well of course at the time I thought it was funny! Can't you tell when somepony is being sarcastic?"
Free Thinker just stopped laughing. "Well I would have noticed if you were doing it right, but since you did it all wrong I couldn't tell! And at any rate, what should it even matter? What we did in that little town was all good, clean fun. You even agreed just now that it was funny. Those ponies that kicked us out were just too sensitive. Not my fault nopony can take a joke!"
"Oh this is so typical of you! Too proud to admit that maybe what we did was wrong and that is precisely what worries me."
The earth pony just continued to look confused by his apprentice's choice of words. "What, why? You never seemed to care much before. So, why the sudden change of mind?" Free Thinker asked suspiciously.
To which Rapid only turned away from him and sighed. "It was more of a change of heart," the blue unicorn admitted softly.
Watching him, Free Thinker just shook his head. "Look Rapid I want to help you. Really I do. You're my best friend and..." The earth pony then sighed. "But I just can't unless you let me in! Please tell me what distracts you, what occupies your thoughts?" he asked, concerned. Rapid just said nothing, but Free Thinker watched him and an idea began to dawn on him. "Something's been scaring you, hasn't it? You're worried about something? You're beginning to fear your own magic because you think it'll corrupt you. That's it, isn't it?" Free Thinker confronted in an accusing tone.
Rapid just glared at his mentor. "No, of course not! Don't be silly. I'm a unicorn, after all. I'm supposed to do magic. Why would I suddenly be scared to do something I was clearly made to do? Why the very idea of it is just ridiculous, that's what it is!" reassured Rapid Quill though he was mostly trying to reassure himself of this. He was lying of course. One could easily tell it by looking at his face. Sweat started to drip from it and it seemed to pale since Free Thinker hit the nail hard on the head. He truly did fear his unicorn magic corrupting him.
Rapid's bright yellow eyes then landed on a puddle near him, a little leftover gift that yesterday's rainstorm brought. Initially, his reflection looked normal enough, but then a second glance proved him wrong. His reflection wore a sinister smile and winked back at him. Startled by the image, Rapid fell over backwards. Letting out a moan of pain, Rapid rubbed the back of his neck.
Seeing this Free Thinker ran over to him splashing across the puddle along the way ruining the image. "Uh you okay?" he asked helping Rapid back up to his hooves.
Dusting himself off Rapid nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just sort of um lost my balance back there for a sec. But, I'll be okay. How about you, did you really mean what you said? Are you really my best friend?" Rapid asked in a dreamy tone as he scooted closer.
Face turning a bright red, the turquoise earth pony just sort of casually pushed Rapid off him. "Oh of course you are! Not like I'm close to anypony else. But uh what made you fall just now?" he asked looking suspiciously at the ground.
It was Rapid's turn to blush. "Uh nothing. Just clumsy I guess. As I said I just lost my balance and fell. No big deal. Why so suspicious all of a sudden?"
"Because I know you're lying. Admit it. I was right before, wasn't I? Something is scaring you. Please let me in. Don't shut me out like this. I want to help you," the earth pony pleaded.
Glancing back at the puddle, Rapid was relieved to see that his reflection returned to normal.
Noticing how deeply Rapid was staring at the puddle, Free Thinker inquired in a suspicious tone, "what are you looking at?"
Rapid just firmly shook his head. "Nothing. I gotta go." And before Free Thinker could get another word in, Rapid turned on his hooves and ran off.
Rapid didn't slow down until he reached the marketplace. Head held low, Rapid walked around. Not paying too much attention to where he was going, he kept bumping into other ponies. "Sorry," he merely mumbled under his breath every time he bumped into someone. 'Maybe Free Thinker's right. Maybe I do fear turning evil, but there is just no way I can admit that to him or to anypony for that matter. I just can't! But maybe a dream interpreter can help? But where can I find one? Princess Luna must be too busy to speak with someone as ordinary as me,' Rapid thought to himself with a depressed sigh.
