Motivation
Currently unemployed, Lily has a desire to learn and discover as much as she can. She dreams of one day writing her own books and perhaps even being employed as a botanist, but she has no idea how to even begin such a career and who would pay her to research flora. For now, she gets by off the good graces of her parents, living in the family summer home in Ponyville and supplementing what support she receives from family by growing and selling a variety of plants and flowers.

Overall Persona
Although she specializes in studying plants, Lilly is highly curious about anything and everything. When she was younger, she didn't have many friends and began to fill her time with discovery, taking things apart and putting them back together, testing her limitations with magic and reading whatever text she could get her hooves on. Her desire for knowledge was voracious and it drew her apart from what few friends she had.
As she grew older, she also grew lonelier. Her parents, concerned for their daughter, encouraged her to get out more. She began visiting the various gardens in Canterlot and what started out as parental nudge became a healthy fascination, talking with the various caretakers of the gardens and the ponies who came to enjoy nature. In time, she realized that while she was quite resilient and independent, she was not totally immune to the effects of her isolated habits. She earned her cutie mark that day, three flowers, because flowers never bloom alone.
Lilly is studious and reclusive, but not shy. She mostly spends her time alone if she can, but as she learned on that most wonderful day, even the most diligent of ponies feel the pain of loneliness from time to time. To that end, she does try to get out some and enjoy the odd festival or spa visit in an attempt to foster some sort of socialization. But unless actively seeking to socialize, she can be quite blunt and rude.
