Both her parents performed in plays when they were younger, and her sister is currently a go-to actress. Despite her parents making both she and her sister take acting classes, Stage Mask didn't take to acting like the rest of her family, though she was talented. Her heart was taken by costume design, particularly masks. Eventually, her sister started to outshine her, especially at home. Her parents showered Spotlight with affection, paying little attention to Stage Mask. This caused her to start pulling away from the world, choosing to hide behind the scenes as she perfected her masks. When it became too much to deal with, Stage Mask left for Ponyville to try and escape her family's shadow.
When it comes to other ponies, Stage Mask is stand-offish due to her insecurities created by her family. However, she's just a "diamon-in-the-rough", as her mother puts it. She's extremely empathetic, and can easily read the emotions of other ponies. Really, she just wants to make friends who don't just see her sister in her.
