Hi everyone!
This is a guide for, as the name would suggest, giving your OC a name. I made this guide because myself, and I'm sure a lot of other people, have trouble coming up with a name that reflects their character, while still keeping close to the style of the show. Anyway, enough with the introduction, and onwards to the main event!
Earth ponies are named around a family theme.
For example: The Cakes all having pastry related names, The Apples all having apple or apple product related names, Pinkie's family being named after the ghosts of Pacman. If you'd like some examples on non-pony family-theme naming, look at the characters of Dragon Ball Z (All the Saiyans are vegetables [Vegeta = "Vegetable," Kakarot = "Carrot," Raditz = "Radish"])
Unicorn ponies are named based on a future talent
For example: Lyra Heartstrings plays the lyre, Shining Armor's role in the military , Trixie does tricks as a stage performer, or future destiny (Example: Twilight Sparkle; the light level of 'twilight' being part of the phase of the day/night cycle- her destiny of becoming a princess, Fancy Pants destined to be in the upper class
Pegasus ponies are named based on personality and physical traits.
For example: Rainbow Dash, her mane is a rainbow, and she loves to go fast, or 'dash'. Fluttershy, not a powerful flyer, extreme social anxiety. Daring Do adventurer type personality, though with a name like this, she could have also been a unicorn. Maybe her author is a unicorn?
So there you have it. My all inclusive guide to naming your pony OC. I'd include other races, like Zebras or Cows, though these races either haven't had enough screen time, or there hasn't been enough characters of that race for me to determine a naming pattern. (Although cows may be named after cow-related puns, and the word "zecora" was, but is no longer, the word used for zebra by the Oromo people of east Africa, so there's that).
NOTICE: This guide is, by no means, an official document that you must adhere by. If you want to completely disregard this information, then by all means you are free to do so.
